North Korea documentary

My wife brought home a dvd made by the BBC called "State Of Mind". It was a documentary of these little girls who were training for the Mass Games. These Mass Games are all kinds of gymnastics and demonstrations that are done for Kim Jong IL several times a year. There are thousands and thousands of people involved in this, and it is impressive to see, but this wasn't really what was important about the film.

The core purpose of the film was to show the communist life that is lived in North Korea. The crew was given free reign to film whatever they wanted. It was an eyeopener for me, and I thought I knew a good amount about N Korea having served a year south of their border.

They only have one tv channel which only shows what the government wants them to see, and they are allotted the tv by the government. There is a radio in every kitchen of every house in Pyongyang City that plays government propaganda. It can be turned down, but it cannot be turned off. They are allotted one chicken a month, and 5 pounds of rice. They do have jobs and buy other food, but pretty much everything is provided by the government. There are very few cars. You see the streets and it looks like the world ended. There is no religion, no holidays, nothing. The only holiday they have is the deceased Kim il Songs birthday.

If you don't mind subtitles for 92 minutes, this movie is probably the best thing about North Korea I have ever seen. In a nutshell, that country lives like a giant cult. Every function, everything that goes on is for Kim Jong il. Terms like "collective mind" and such are used. It took me about thirteen minutes of watching the movie to compare that country to the Borg on Star Trek.

Anyone who thinks socialism is a good thing needs to watch this movie and see just how well it works. Scary Shyte.....

I also serverd a year in S. Korea, only a month on the DMZ, the rest at Camp Casey. It was an intersting tour.
The only thing I remember was their leader at the time, forgot his name, had a baseball size tumor on his neck I think.
Worknig with the KATUSA soilders was enlightening as to their feelings towards the North.

I was at Casey as well. When were you there? I was there from June 93 to June 94, but for the life of me I can't remember the unit beyond being 2nd Infantry Division.

The Katusa's were interesting. What was also interesting was the estimated 35,000 N Korean operatives that were in S Korea at any given moment.

I liked it there, it was interesting. I had this little 80 pound prostitute that wanted to marry me and come back to the "Land of the big PX". Lots o' fun...

I was there in 85-86. 1/72 armor. I think we all had that girl! My club was the Dragon Club.

Reading this post reminded me that my cousin also served there, he was a army tow gunner.

He brought back a 80lb souvinere (girl) that turned into a 150lb one right quick after all the endless American food.

I think I may have seen some of that movie before and it is sad.

It truly shows how disturbed Kim Jong il is.

18 months in that God forsaken country...83/84
No Wait I was in South Korea! ;)
Did get flown into the buffer zone once.
We had lost 7 soldiers that week. 5 Rock and 2 Americans.
(Training Accidents) of course. (roll eyes)

Sounds like a good film to watch Jason.
The BBC may have had full access but they didnt report the
whole truth. Same as CNN in Iraq.
They left out the Concentration camps where you can be thrown into for speaking out against the goverment.

Ok not just one person. That person, his family (kids) and the grand kids.
If anyone survives after three generations they can be let go.
Everyone knows about it but no-one talks about it.

Good post Jason.
Just put that down as dvd to pick up.

How can you guys buy into this BBC produced propaganda?!?! Why, don't you know that Kim Jong Il is great? President Carter personally washes his jock and the Clinton administration generously gave him two nuclear reactors! Not to mention, he and Fidel Castro are close pals, and every Hollywood purveyor of culture and prognosticator of Peace, Love and Happiness just go ga- over Castro because of the great humanitarian work he has accomplished in Cuba. I think you guys have seen too much Team America!

Re: North Korea documentary

Sounds like a Rush Limbaugh utopia!

One radio station blasting out blatant propoganda!

And the TV station would be Fox News!

Now how could it get any better than that?
