Well it certainly doesn't do any good for our President to keep responding to threats of this type with talk of "dire circumstances", "viewed as an act of aggression" or in other words " You better not or I'll sick Condi on you".
You can just see Iran and N. Korea are just shaking in their sandals.
I used to like it when Bush talked tough. But now the only people he scares is almost everybody but the enemy.

Ok,

We have a situation where they have the fissionable material for 10 bombs. So far they do not have the means to throw them very far. S. Korea, China and Japan have more at stake than we do short term.
As NK developes the means to hurl those 6 bombs further and gains the material to buld more our concern should rise.

The do not have aircraft carriers or submarines that can get a nuclear weapon near us.

But what Kim has is a very impoverished country that has spent most of its wealth on a military it cannot feed.

He has to make his citizens feel threatened in order to keep them in his control.

There was also a brief border skirmish at the DMZ that diveides the two Koreas the other day.

Kim may do like Hitler did in Poland and arrange an attack on NK in order to use his new toys.

We ought to visit with the Chinese about how to handle this. It requires ALL the surrounding nations speaking with one voice and having the support of the western nations as well.

In a related matter the UN is strongly leaning towards replacing Koffee Ahnon with a South Korean diplomat.

The reactors that were supplied by the the US are a Light Water design that produces less fissionable material than the nuclear reactors they were replacing.

(Cannot remember for certain but I think some of the reactors NK had were of the Chernobyl design)

I see.So you hold GW accountable for the recent events?Correct?
And your recommendation to GW is.............
1. Come in with six gunza blazin
2.Sit quietly in the corner for an hour
3,get a spankin

What exactly could GW have done that would have us and NK singing Christmas carols together this upcoming Holiday?Kim Jong Ding Dong has all the social graces of an axe murderer.Would China defend any overt US action against NK.Tune in to the next episiode.

Well, this can't surprise anyone can it?

NK is acting like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum on the floor. They are going to do it until they get attention, and they don't particularly care what that attention consists of.

Unfortunately, it will work, and they will get the world's attention.

It is complete folly to think we can get by with not talking to our enemies.

Watch the UN do nothing. This is exactly why it was formed to deal with. They probably see this as a way to line their pockets. This act is a violation of UN resolution.

Re: North Korea performs underground nuclear test

Bush should have stopped Kim? What kind of lunacy is that? The French, Germans and Russians won't let anyone touch Iran, and they are doing the same thing. China wouldn't let anyone touch NK. Not that Bush could do anything anyway. I mean, this administration can't even interrogate enemy combatants without a bunch of whinny liberal socialists hiring lawyers to infer Constitutional rights on non-citizen terrorists. This administration can't listen to terrorists phone calls, or track their money without liberals rushing to the defense of the terrorists.

In 1982 the world condemned Israel for destroying the nuclear ambitions of Iraq/Saddam. So Bush was supposed to do the same NK, when he can't even monitor a phone call without being labeled a fascist dictator?!?!?

Not to mention, he would not even face this situation if Jimmy Carter hadn't gone to NK and performed his powers of appeasement. It was Carter, Albright and Clinton that gave the nuke technology (at US taxpayer expense) to NK. Now NK can't deliver their nukes far, If you chose to believe that. China didn't have the technology to accurately launch rockets/missiles at Japan until Clinton sent experts from our JPL to China to help them with their "Space Program." Now China can attack North America, and if anyone thinks China played no part in supplying NK with technology, hardware, etc. in their quest for nukes, well I think your smoking rope.

So, to recap, thanks to the Clinton administration:
China has ICBM's
NK has two nuclear reactors
NK has Nuclear bombs

and all this is Bush's fault. Liberalism is a mental disorder. The only thing that save the free world is for conservative Americans to tell the whining libs to STFU and do what needs to be done; damn the torpedoes and the ACLU, et al.

Re: North Korea performs underground nuclear test

Gee, two little sentences started a feeding frenzy!
Either I'm getting good at this, or you guys are very predictable......
Actually my first post is my real answer.....
We can wring our hands as much as we want, but we don't have any control over this situation, much to "W's" chagrin.....
This is China's problem, & the U.S. needs to butt out & mind our own business, for once.....
China will not allow the flow of Greenbacks to cease.....
They are not stupid & will squish NK like a bug if Kim gets too uppity........
The best thing we can do is ignore him........JK

Re: North Korea performs underground nuclear test

"And you want him to feel at ease, SOmething really wrong going on there rat."

Hell yes I want the SOB to feel at ease! What do you want, for the guy to be all twitchy and uptight? None of W's tough talk has done a thing and to say that if Bill hadn't facilitated a power plant means that NK would never have got one is nonsense. The guy wanted nukes and he was going to find someone to get them from. Get over your Clinton obsession already!

"It is complete folly to think we can get by with not talking to our enemies. "

Thank you PW! Unfortunately that has been one of the central assumptions of the Bush foreign policy plan, and also reminds me of a spoiled child throwing a tantrum.

"The only thing that save the free world is for conservative Americans to tell the whining libs to STFU and do what needs to be done; damn the torpedoes and the ACLU, et al."

Oh yes, conservatives have all the answers and are the last best hope for saving the world. Talk about meglomania! Since the neo-cons have had ALL the reins of power in their hands for most of the last 6 years, what's the hold-up? Do what needs to be done? What would that be, invade NK? We are bogged down in Iraq for the next 100 years if we keep on "staying the course" and you guys want to go start kicking someone else's ass just because they have a nutty leader and they now have a tiny handful of the same kind of weapons that we've had for 60 years?

You really think that China could not have developed their own ICBMs? Or that NK couldn't have found a way to get nuclear reactors and power plants with the US's help? See above: get over your Clinton obsession already, the guy is no longer in power! And even if all these things really are only Bill's fault, continuing to whine and blame Clinton and the libs for every one of the worlds ills does NOTHING to solve any problems. And last I checked, 6 years of mostly unfettered conservative power hasn't solved many problems either.

You guys like to yak away about how the libs keep Bush from doing what he wants as if that's true. W got his war, run completely by his own loyalists, and it's a mess with no end in sight. We ARE torturing prisoners and suspected terrorists, we ARE randomly and without showing cause keeping certain US citizens from flying based on their political affiliations, we ARE monitoring god knows how many phone calls an conducting secret, warrantless searches based on a "trust us" from the W administration and every time W signs a law into effect he makes a side statement about he is only going to obey it if he feels like it. What part of this has been stopped by whiny libs?

Re: North Korea performs underground nuclear test

South Korea's state geology research center detected a 3.58-magnitude "artificial earthquake" in a remote area of North Korea's North Hamgyeong Province, according to the news agency. Judging from the seismic tremor, the center said the power of the explosion was equivalent to around a half kiloton of TNT explosives, Yonhap reported.

A very small device, or a very large pile of conventional explosives...... and why would N. Korea make what is equivalent to an artillery nuke?

I smell a rat.

erickems, check with your man Donald Rumsefeld on the sale of the 2 light water reactors to North Kprea.
seems he inked that deal in the late 90´s eraly 2000´s while working with ABB.
as far as the nuke thret posed by NK so far its a very minimal threat, according to the international anylysts I saw this morning.
so far the devices are very lrge and crude as well as to hevy for use on ny developed ICBM the NK´s have to date.
so far they could blow themselves up and not much more.
the device detonted yesterday had a lower yeild than the devices were used in WWII.
its worth keeping an eye on but I suspect its ploy for more food aid.
but the NK´s have been using chinese and russian technology for mny years to advance their weapons programs.

I checked with him and he said Slick Willey gave the OK.

President Bush has been doing, or trying to do what the libs want, have talks. But it's kinda hard to have talks when the other side doesn't show up.

I thought we have to have the UN handle everything. Ya know, get tho OK from them to do anything. So we go this route, and guess what, still President Bush's fault. SO if we use the military without the UN OK, he's wrong. If we take the lib route and talk, he's wrong.

So wait to see how your buddy's at the UN handle it. Oh wait, they won't stop him. But hey, maybe some more sanctions, those have worked real well so far.

Re: North Korea performs underground nuclear test

SEOUL (CNN) -- Scientific analysis of an explosion in North Korea is raising questions about Pyongyang's claim that it carried out a successful underground nuclear test on Monday.

U.S., French, and South Korean atomic and geological analysts have confirmed a sub-kiloton explosion occurred, but there is no data to back up North Korea's claim of a nuclear detonation.

French Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said the size of the blast could show that it was "not an extremely powerful explosion or ... that there could have been a failure." (Posted 1:39 p.m. )

The US want talks with NK rather than invasion because NK's military set up is far more formidable than Iraq's was. Besides, no oil there.

ya really need to read the history behind the sale of 2 light water reactors from ABB to the NK govt. clinton could not have stopped it if he had or had not wanted to.
the light water reactors were to replace some of the dirtier and more weapons grade capable rectors fromm the USSR and france that were online or would be shortly.
I think the NK govt is just rattiling again.
there program,if that what you call it, is not going well and the delivery system is even worse.

most internationl nuclear arms experts think today NK may be able to target SK but with only a 50% probability of acually hitting the country. most probable is a launch failure and possible chemical explosion that would contaminate the launch site.

SK,China and the USSR are or should be way more concerened than the US.

the US needs to be more concerned with securing our entry ports and borders from unauthorized product entry and less with kym sung and his sabre rattilnig for rice.

so does the planet need yet another unstable govt with nuke weapons? nope.
can the NK govt actually do more than blow themselves up? not really.

as far as sanctions, what a joke. how ya gonna sanction a nation whose civilians already have nothing ?
kinda like all the hoo haa about bombing afghnistan back to the stone age. that could have been accomplished with a few cherry bombs.
the only people sanctions will hurt is the poor guy in the rice paddy. wont affect any high level govt one iota.
they just dont care.
look at saddams and his high govt´s lifestyle while UN sanctions killed millions of average Iraqi. the sanctions only made saddam stronger and created hatred.

Stop pointing fingers like our politicians and lets work on a solution.

We can either pay this blackmailer his ransom

or

Go to war

or

Assasination

**************************
I think war is not an option right now, payoffs only incite others to try.

I suggest assination, or at least try.
