Well we sure share a lot of similar disdain for the state of affairs Skinnywater.I'm just not convinced that there is any specific rational act that the current administration could have done to curtail this Kim Jong mentality.Sure the US could crush NK like a bug.The trouble with that is the uncertainty of exactly who stands with the US in its mission to shut this creep down.Namely China. They really hold the trump card on this one.
Keeping in mind the total action that I suggested above consider these likely dynamics.
Once we had a solid track record of soundly defeating our enemys frees up a lot of military resources. Because after all, war is the first step to peace.
If we do have to put some crazy dictator back in line you could best bet the public would be all for it.
Indeed if we were to finally get around to acting like a superpower and actually use all that military we've paid dearly for the past 60 years, China would conduct a more overt arms race. The solution is simple there to, just tax their imports into this country into absolecents.

Today the president is extremely limited in his ability to even back up what he should say or do. At the rate he's become irrelevant to the world China could take back Formosa and the only price they would have to pay is listening to Condi say "they're in big trouble now."

Remember, after 9/11 there was overwhelming support from all sides to go to war. That support has only deteriorated because of one mistake or miscalculation after another.
Some understandable, some not, some unfortunate, some avoidable, some legitamate, some not.
Still a lot of mistakes and in my opinion many are his rightfully to bear.
For a President that is supposedly riding on the illusion that he is the great protector of national security I'm thinking he's put at risk our national security like no other.

Put the blame where it really belongs... a Country divided (by dirty partizan politics) is already half way to defeat.
The partisan politics and division to the degree they've become is a result of a lack of leadership....period. A lack of leadership by both sides. There isn't the competence, or the will, or the true characture from any in office to rise above all the hash and trash and become a hero.
I'm not sure most here would recognize one if one was to come along.
After all, for years now everyone has been argueing that their Republican turd doesn't stink as bad as the other guy's Democrat turd.

The best thing that can happen for this country is if we were to all vote for any candidate, any, that doesn't have a "D" or "R" next to their name.

OB, don't be so sure we could crush NK like a bug. They have over 1 million troops. Air power alone will never win a war. It would be like Vietnam all over again, or even worse.

In 1990 Iraq had the 4th largest military, N. Korea was 5th... Now N. Korea is 4th and we all know how long it took air power to reduce Iraq to non-contender status.

The old adage of air power alone won't win a war no longer holds true, unless your intention is to take and hold ground.... N, Korea, who would want it?

I know how badly you want to blame your lord's indescretions on someone else, but sometimes the truth simply cannot be burried by blaming them on Bush or anyone else.
He GAVE N Korea nuke tech and the missle tech to deliver it.

"North Korea, which rattled the region by test-firing a rocket over Japan in 1998, has offered to drop its long-range missile program in return for billions of dollars in compensation" (From the 6 year old article i linked to)

An interesting report that kinda explains it all

Isn't that nice?
Haut, wake up. You're excusing the enemy once again while weakly attempting to pin Clinton's incompetence on Bush.
Hatered that deep motivated benedict Arnold..

Custom, don't compare apples to oranges. Iraq invaded its neighbor and didn't really have any allies, and they certainly didn't have any nukes. They also had no real technology. NK has a large ally in the region, and they are nuclear, along with their ally, China. They can't even really condemn NK for what they did, they are just being "more forceful than in the past", whatever that means. We cannot beat both NK and China in a conventional war, and if we start slinging nukes we're likely to end all civilization.

The same reason we can't touch Iran. An entire Russian armored division is sitting just on the other side of the Iranian border. If we touch Iran, we'll be fighting Russia within minutes. Russia has made a pact with China, so if we touch Russia we touch China, and of course we can't beat all 3 conventional, so again, it would be nuclear holocaust. That came straight from a sergeant in the military. I can't disclose his name. We can't stop Isreal from hitting Iran, but I can almost promise we won't do it.

Don't bet China will defend N. Korea.... they are just as pissed as we are about the "slap in the face" N. Korea gave the world, but it really stings them as they told NK not to do it.... and face is everything in China.... not that I advocate invading them. I was just pointing out a misconception.

As to NK being nuclear, they told China the yield would be 4 kilotons and it was .5 kt....... that spells fizzle and back to the black board.

My statement was from a hypothetical view. Not a politically correct one. That hypothetical is without consideration of colateral damage.Of course that's not our style. And thankfully so.Trust me .The US has the technical capability of vaporizing NK.Nk knows this. They also know that we are a just country that doesn't flaunt and abuse its power. That's what they're cashing in on.Just like Viet Nam and Iraq. The rules of war changed drastically after 1945.That's what makes things not so cut and dry.Anyway, that's my take.

Otherwise, some very good points made from many.
