Re: Norton anti virus VS. Trend Micro Internet

Homerr,
It's good to use different online ones. It's a lot more trouble to get accurate security information from inside your network when you're really interested in your security vs. the outside world. grc.com has some good free scanning stuff, although the guy who runs it is a bit of a freak and an alarmist, so don't pay *too* much attention to what he says.

As far as the interior of your network goes, for home stuff you're likely to be ok running AV software, anti-spy and adware software, and if you really don't trust the other machines on your network, host-based firewalls. The heavier duty scanners and pen-testers (tools like nessus and whisker, etc.) are really made for corporate networks where you can't trust the interior netizens much more than the Internet.

Homerr,

Ol' Norse's reply sums it up nicely....
Glad to hear you have things under control.

I have Norton and will sometimes get a notice from somebody that I have the Doom virus. I ran the Housecall and came up with 3 trojans and 3 other virus's. I beleive that Trend has a new customer.

I found out my mcafee subscription was long over due on my XP system. I paid the 80 dollars for the complete internet security 7.0 from mcafee. I could not download the program. I spent all last night and most of tonight with online support and nothing would work. I ran mcafees virus scan and nothing. I went to trend micro. I did a scan and they found 2 virus. I paid for the firewall and virus protection at 50 bucks and 15 minutes later I am running. I have been using mcafees for two years now because of problems with nortons. Hope this works better. I am impressed already. Thanks for the link Homerr

I use AVG Free Edition Antivirus, Kerio Personal Firewall Free Edition, Spybot and Ad Aware. They are the best combination I've found for Windows XP Pro.

I've had bad experiences with the following:
Zonealarm Firewall (kept freezing XP Pro)
Norton Antivirus (freezes and slows computer)
McAfee Antivirus (same as Norton!)
