Nose Cone Broke Off

I was at the ramp tuning it up after the repower . I set the timing tightened a couple leaking gaskets and all was well. The fourth time I went to start it the nose cone on my starter broke off inside the bellhousing. First, the starter was on very tight was over the 35-40lbs of torque. It was an arco starter. When I got the starter out at the ramp it had chewed two teeth off about 3 teeth apart on my flywheel. I rotated the engine with a socket and inspected the rest of the flywheel and it is fine. So what is the most common cause of a nose cone break? As far as the two teeth how big of a problem will this cause? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks to all your help I am back on the water and it is beautiful... Thanks

I did that with a 350 in a NOVA. I used a cuple extra shims and never had another problem. It made a horrible screach sound every once in a while but that only seemed to happen when the missing teeth on the bendix and the flywheel met. I ran it like that for 4 years untill i blew it up at the track then it got replaced. I hope this helps sir.

i have to ask... are you using starter specific bolts? or is it just any old bolt you have holding that thing in there??? If you replace it you should buy brand new starter bolts... and double check that the ones you buy fit snug in the housing.

Re: Nose Cone Broke Off

Hung up flyweights in the mechanical advance can cause hard start/backfire and break a starter.

A couple of missing teeth on a ring gear won't stop a car at the track, your boat is another story. Eventually it will be 3 teeth in a row, then 4, then one day you will be drifting down the river and the starter just sings, and the motor won't crank, and that raft of barges keep getting closer, and closer, and...........

you get my 'drift'?

Thats when you just grab the accesory belt and turn the engine a little bit to find some good teeth!
