Hello All,

Fathers day we got a new (in good condition used boat) Maxum 1700 with a 1997 Force 120, when we bought the boat we knew that the impeller need to be replaced.
Well after replace the impeller, we find out the the thermostat was bad, so we replace the thermostat. Then we replace the Lower Unit Oil with the recommended QuickSilver Oil.
4th of July weekend we got the boat wet, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Boat and Motor did really well, until Monday afternoon when was time to bring the boat back home!
Just a couple yards from the ramp, on big buumm. Motor running, prop not spinning!!!
We got the boat out of the water and we see a crack at the lower unit :-(

Been looking, calling and searching online for 2 days for a used lower unit and seams that nobody has one, all I could find is new or Remanufactured that goes for over $2000.
Does anyone knows a place where I can find one? Or knows any other option?
I don't know if a lower unit from a 1997 force 90 HP would work or even Mercury Marine lower unit.

Thanks

Look on Ebay.com under force lower unit. Expect to pay between 5 and 6 hundred.

Sorry late post.

Yes the 1997 90 hp will work.

You can use a gearcase from a--

90 hp 1995-1999
120 hp 1995-1999
75 hp 1999 only

ebay is your best bet, and there is one there now.

Thank you Roscoe,
I did see that one, but how about 3 Jaw and 6 Jaw??
I believe that one is a 1998 that has 6 Jaw, will that work?
Do I need to make any alterations??

Thanks

Ummm, yes, will work, but will require that you get a new shiftshaft to match up.

HOW TO TELL THE NUMBER OF REVERSE GEAR JAWS:
EXAMINE TAB AGAINST TRIM FIN SCREW

Re: Not a good weekend for my 1997 force 120 HP

Last night I was able to get a 1996 force 90HP of ebay. :) Price wasn't to bad.
The new used lower unit should be here some by Monday next week.

The lower unit will be dry, so I will need to add new gear oil and I'm planning on check and if necessary replace the impeller.

I know the motor is a 120HP and I'll be installing a lower unit from a 90HP.
Has anything that I should know or do before I install the new (used) lower unit?

How can I be sure the the new unit will go in place correctly like the gear box will go to forward, neutral and reverse?

Thanks

Everything works really well, thanks!
Lower unit is in, boat is in the water for 3 weeks running great.
The only thing now is to get a new propeller for it cuz the new lower unit is from a 90HP with 2.30 gear ratio.
Right now she is doing 43 mph on the Gps and I still have more throttle, rpm at 43mph is at 5200..
I'm looking at new prop maybe a 23 p.
I will let u know
