NOT CHARGING- Need wire diagram

1990 Mercruiser 350 Sterndrive.

Dual batteries, Perko set up (1, 2 or all). Just had the Mechanic install a electric fuel pump. Had it on the lake and saw the voltage gauge up to 11 amps. I used my voltage meter and found 1 battery at 11.92 and the other 12.23, with the engine running. Both batteries are new, cables are clean and good as well as a new starter. I could not find any problems with the alt. wires.

I was thinking maybe the mechanic wired it wrong when installing the ele. fuel pump on the starter solenoid.

Looking for a simple alt. wiring diagram to trace all wires to see if they are right. I'm enclosing a pic. of it so it helps to indentify the alt.

Do you think the alternater is bad.

Also, If I take the starter off to have it rebuilt will my automatic bileg pump still work? The boat is at the marina.

...ya' sure that wasn't VOLTS?? BIG difference here.

...I doubt it, unless he removed the positive lead from the alternator to the hot side of the solenoid.

Do you think the alternater is bad.

...A TWO-LEGGED PUMP !!?? seriously though: Having no clue where your bilge pump seeks power, simply install a temporary jumper from the battery + the the float switche's line side while the atarter and alternator are out. Chances are that your starter repair shop can load test your alternator, too.

Sorry, my mistake, it is volts instead amps.

Concerning the automatic bilge, When the perko is set to off, the automatic bilge still works. I'm not taking the starter off just the alternater. I was wondering if the bilge would still operate.

When taking the alt. off and setting the Perko to off, do I need to disconnect both batteries?

Judging from my pitcure, it looks like I have 4 wires. Is that an external regulator in the back.

How do you test voltage at the 4 wires of the alternater.

Could not find a diagram on the STICKY PAGE.

...YOU'RE the one who said you're removing the starter in the original post!!!!

...when removing the alternator, set the Perko to off and leave the battery connections alone.

...that does appear to be an external regulator, and the best test is on a load bench. Output is about all you can check while the alternator is assembled. And by the way...I can not detect a spark screen in your alternator...you SURE it's a MARINE unit???

That regulator is part of the alternator and is not considered an external regulator.

Check battery voltage with a meter when running the engine over 1500RPM. Should be at least 13.5V. If it isn't, your alternator is not working.

Your bilge pump is wired so it goes directly to the battery. That way, with the Perko switch off, you still have your bilge pump.

Don't hammer me! yes I meant alternater.

Thank you for letting me know that the bilge pump will be ok.

I did run it up to 1500 rpm still not above 12 volts. I was told to take my voltmeter pos. and place it on the Orange/hot wire on the alt. and take the other side of the voltmeter and touch the alt. while tha engine is running to see what the alt. is putting out.

Is that true.

To answer your question about running up to 1500 RPM and measuring the voltage on the orange wire and the negative meter lead to the case of the alternator, this is correct. If the voltage is good (>13.5 volts) there then you have a bad connection to your batteries, but this is unliklely unless the wiring was disturbed.

That is true provided you put the negative meter lead on the SHELL of the alternator AND the alternator is bolted tight so it actually has a solid ground.

Searay87- Thank you for the diagram, I've saved a copy to my harddrive. I like DBelectronics, I've ordered a starter from them awhile ago, it wasn't expensive, high torque works great. I was just about to order the alt. from them up until I found out what was wrong.

I tried the VM back of the alt. test, Nothing. Boy that sure is a very tight fit in that engine compartment. I don't know about you but my alt. is on the bottom. Anyway, I took it to a rebuild shop, bench tested it, it was shot. They rebuilt the unit today for $48.00, not bad. I just got back from installing it and everything charges fine.

JBC; You're welcome. Nice to hear your alt. was repairable. The slip rings on mine were shot. New one here locally cost $200. The alt in my engine compartment is easy to get to. Good thing becasue the belt needs tightnening every 4 hrs or so.
