Re: not enough RPM's!

The specs I gave are for a Prestolite electronic BID distributor, and I don't have any specific specs for an OMC, but most of the mechanical advances were very similar. 8°-10° at idle, 30° at 3000 rpm.

Re: not enough RPM's!

Hi again.
I don't know if you remember, but I had a question in november as to why my 5.7 GS couldn't get to the specified rpm's at wot.
I got alot of info. from you guys on what to check and I did all that.
In Jan. I found the problem!
It had nothing to do with the ignition - carb - compression or any of all the other things we talked about...............
In the exhaust pipes there are mounted two seals to prevent the water from going back-wards into the engine if slowing down to fast - right?
......... guess what happens when the pin that holds those seals breaks???????
THEY FALL DOWN! -and block the exhaust pipes!
I have to admit that I felt a little stupid when I found that the seals were blocking the exhaust, leaving around 10% of the exhaust open.
No wonder the engine couldn't pick up the rev's!
Anyway - I thought I'd let you all know, just in case someone else, as stupid as me, asks the same question some other time.
Thanks for all the replies back in november.
Have a great summer - I know I will.
-Mikbaek.

Re: not enough RPM's!

It does make sense, doesn't it.
The funny thing is that my mecanic asked me how the seals were doing - I didn't know, so I removed the elbows and discovered that they weren't even there. The conclusion was that if they weren't there, they couldn't do any harm! RIGHT????.........riiight!
Another funny thing about it is that when you ask Volvo Penta about these seals, they will tell you to remove the seals. They won't tell you why! So after talking to Volvo we concluded that the previous owner had allready removed them, and therefore we went back to the engine to find out what was wrong.
You can't even buy new seals at VP, I had to get mine from an OMC dealer. He said he would never consider driving the boat without them! I don't know if you have the same problem in the states, but that's the deal here in Denmark.
Now I have the smoothest running VP in the harbour and the next time I loose rev's on the engine - elbows off!!!!!!.............
-Mikkel.
