I wouldn't worry too much about gauge backlights (not including running lights) as I suspect they would be normal on some boats. I was thinking more on the lines of unusual loads like depth finders, vhf, stereos, or whatever - which you indicated is fused seperatly. These apparatus should be run on seperate power directly from the battery as I suspect you have. As said above, get a DMM and check the voltage at different points, starting with the battery lugs. If you have a wiring diagram of the control cable, trace the wiring through each point along where the voltmeter is, and check the volts right at the voltmeter. Is there a seperate lead for the voltmeter?? Other wise, your back to the stator as marine doctor says, but checking voltage is a cheaper first check.
