oh, the bellow on the bottom that the water comes out of it is split. Is there a need to replace it?

Question #1:Mercruiser #6. Question #2: Not absolutely necessary, but I would while the boat is out of the water. Inspect the rest of the rubber,too....JK

If that bellow is split, the main bellows is probably not far behind.Charlie

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

I'm starting to get confused. The serial on the plate on the top front said it was a model 470, the guy from mercruiser says it's a MC-1 and all I was able to tell him was the boats year, and now when I was removing the lower half I see Alpa One on it faded. I'm guessing I should go with Alpha One.

Anyone know a good way to get the allen bolt loose that holds the trim tab (looks like a sac. annode)? It's really in there and I don't want to strip it.

Also where can I get a gasket kit for the lower unit? When I drained the oil out it had water in it so I pressurized it and air was coming out from around the propeller seal and somewhere on the back of the drive near the bellows but I haven't pinpointed it yet.

You got problems..... :( #1: Allen key, use a penetrant, .IE wd-40 or such. The key is a 3/8". Use American steel, not Chinese crap, and it will come without stripping....#2:The really bad news is that your seals are shot in the drive and it needs to be: A: Replaced or B: Completely disassembled, internal parts inspected and replaced as necessary and re-sealed....Basically a re-build......And you need to find out how the water got in there to begin with.....I would look at the drive shaft bellows for a hole or tear...You have your work cut out for you...And a 470 is a 4 cylinder engine, I thought you have a 350 c.i. 8 cyl?.......JK

Ok, I'll put some PB nutbuster on it and let is sit for a while.

I was afraid of that, when I took off the oil drain screw it had metal shavings on it.

Yeah, It's a 350ci/330hp. I had just gotten mixed up

Ok, So for sure I'm gonna need the impeller kit, the bellows, and a manual. The largest leak that I could hear was at the propeller shaft and there is another somewhere near where the main bellow connects to the drive. I know the manual will help clear up alot of this but, you said to check the drive shaft bellow, could a crack in the bellow allow water in?

Also you said I need manual #9 and #6, I've found both on eBay but I didn't see my engine year listed, I just wanted to make sure this was the right manual. It's a 1980 carbureted 350c.i. rated @330H.P.

Thanks, ya'll have helped ALOT

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

Hi. I just picked up the same model and year (1980 ChrisCraft Scorpian 230, chevy350) and am going through the same process of figuring what I really have. Mine has the same set up with an in-line power steering oil cooler on the intake hose between the transom and heat exchanger (closed cooling system).

The water flow on mine seems a little impared also. The port riser way too hot. I'll be replacing the impeller to see if that takes care of it. I'm pretty sure the old guy ran it w/o water a few times.

Anyway, the guys in this forum are definitely a big help and are more than willing to pass on information to keep one on track. Good luck, and please keep us posted.

60BR,As suggested, use a quality allen key.Tap it with a small hammer when you have it lined up .Sand and crap will usually gather in the top of the bolt where you want the key to go.Then clamp on a locking pliers at the bend of the key and use a little leverage or just put an open end wrench on the key to help you turn it.Also be careful with the amount of air pressure you are sending into the o/d.They are made to hold a certain amount of pressure and if there is more it WILL leak past the seals or blow them out.Charlie

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

10 is fine.I dont recall what the amount was that it is supposed to pass the seal at.Im thinking it is around 30 but dont hold me to it.I DO know that 10 is low enough that if it is leaking at that, then you have problems.Charlie

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

hey rebars1, you might be able to help me with something. There is a switch on the gauge panel that is to the right of the RPM gauge that is not labled and is a momentary up or down. I cut it on trying both ways and neither way was I able to hear anything running. Any idea what it is?

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

Mine has two columns of four switches to the right of the tachometer.
The closest column is as follows (top to bottom)
Blower
Horn
Bilge Pump
Wiper

I'm guessing the momentary switch would be for the horn, but it may have been changed over the years. Also, your wiring may different anyway.

Is it labelled "up"/"down", or is that the position the switch moves?

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

that's the way it moves. Mine also has the two columns of switches but this one is not with those. You know how it has 3 different angled panels with switches on the far right, gauges on the far left, and the middle with the tach and two other gauges? This switch is on the middle panel away from the rest of the switches

Mine does not have a switch there. I guess you'll just have to follow the wires from the switch to whatever they connect.

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

I finally got all of the parts for it the other day(atleast I thought).
I went ahead and pulled off the outdrive and when I did water came out of the u-joint bellow but the u-joint is fine, next I replaced the prop seals which went well just was kinda tedious. Then I put air to it again to try and pin point the other leak and there seems to be a few.

The main one now is coming from the shift shaft and there is another coming from the area behind the shift shaft down in the hole back there.
What would the leak be that is down the hole? Also what is needed to replace the seals for the shift shaft?

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

You need to replace your drive shaft bellows if there is water present....Your drive (From what I think I'm hearing) needs to be completely disassembled, checked for worn, rusty, bad parts & then completely re-sealed....Not a cheap option....I would consider a new drive....JK

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

I've got the drive shaft bellow and am going to be replacing it.

At the moment I'm just going to reseal what needs to as I can't really rebuild it or replace it
