Not even a click when I turn the key...

Hi, Everyone!

This is my first post here and unfortunately, it is a long one - and not a positive one.

I just bought an '89 21' Raven with a 5.7 Mercury engine after the old owner took me out for a ride on Friday.

I got it home an hour later and went to flush the nasty Potomac-water out of the cooling system and she would not start.

When I turn the key to the first position, it will light up the gauges and the sensors work, but when I turn the key to start it, nothing changes. No sounds, but the gauges stay powered. Trim and pumps work just fine.

I charged the battery and it shows that it is fully charged. I even piggy-backed a fully charged car battery to make sure that the battery was not the issue, but no change.

I put a circuit tester on the ingition (key) switch. There are 3 inputs on the back. With no key, one set of them kicked out 12 volts. With the key in the first position, no combination kicked out any volts - and same with the key turned all the way.

Circuit tester showed that power is getting to the other end of the positive battery cable.

Does it sound like the ignition is bad? If not, how would I jump the starter to see if the started will work? It's pretty tight around that starter.

Am I missing something else? (the most likely situation since I am new to boats.

I'll see if you guys have a place here to introduce myself. I am on several performance car forums, but this is my first boat forum.

Thanks in advance!

Welocme to iboats, the university of boating. is it in neutral? shake the lever, there is a saftey switch in the controller, if not in neutral, and the switch is not activated, you get nothing.

become familar with the merc I/O forum. there are great, knowledgeable people there. warning if DonS tells you something it's right. they will tell you which manuals you need for the engine and outdrive. there are many differences, and likenesses between automotive and marine engines, and drives.

Thanks for that info!

I've been holding the key on while moving the shifter in every position and got nothing.

I guess I can take a look or the actual switch to see if it is bad.

I'll was going to post in the Merc I/O forum, but I didn't want to get two threads on the same thing. I guess I will try it.

Thanks again!

Nothing like that. Previous owner is stumped, too, so it must be something not so obvious.

Previous owner is my boss, so I believe her.

This boat is really in great shape, but this one little thing...

An 89 model boat should have a kill switch lanyard and I'll bet someone pulled it on you. It's an emergency shut-off consisting of a coiled cord that you attach to your clothing. Should you get pitched overboard, the cord pulls a keeper that pops a switch that kills the engine. If the ignition is on the console, look adacent to it. If the key is on a side mount control it will be directly below the key switch.

I'll be sure to look for that tomorrow. I was all over the console today looking for loose wires but I didn't see anything like that on the console.

Thanks, Silvertip-

You were right, Tashasdaddy - Don S gave me a good link to great info on troubleshooting.

Thanks!
