hey guys wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction

I had my motor firing up and running BUT it would not run for very long

I adjusted my carbs

After this it became a little harder to start...it seemed like my battery was dying out but it would still spin the fly wheel and sometimes crank over

So I recharged the battery

After this it seemed like it got more and more tired....and wouldnt spin the flywheel less effectively but would still start and die right away

After trying to get it going a few more times I lost power all together

Even my trim died and now it will not go up or down...Ive never had any problems with the trim

When I turn the key I can see that the solenoid beside the carbs still engages and goes up when I turn the key

Ive tried jumping it with cables from a good battery doesnt work

Please tell me its not my stator

Re: Not getting any power

I should also mention that a week ago the motor was running great.
I dont think my motor was dying because of a carb adjustment
Its something else that slowly died

My negative line from the battery got kinda hot after awhile

Re: Not getting any power

Grab those trusty battery cables and a KNOWN good battery, jump directly to the starter and motor block. Does the motor crank fine now? If so, start cleaning ALL battery cable ends, including the starter to solenoid cable. Remove your battery, charge it, and take it in somewhere to be load tester to verify its servicability.

Once all back together does it crank fine now?

Now check your charging system, check battery voltage with the motor OFF, start the motor and run it at a fast idle, about 2000, check the voltage and see if it has risen, if so, it is charging.

Now check the rectifier, a very simple test is disconnect both yellow stator wires, check both yellow wires one the regulator for voltage to ground, there should be NONE, if you have any measurable voltage a diode has burnt thru and the rectifier is toast.

Do you have a copy of the FACTORY service manual, if not, check these links and see if yours is available for download.

Study the section on fuel/carbs. AFTER the carbs are cleaned, floats adjusted and reassembled using NEW gaskets the Carb linkage MUST BE adjusted so all carbs open and close EXACTLY together, then the ignition timing must be adjusted at WOT. This is done with the spark plugs OUT, wires grounded, cranking the motor, NOT running.

Now you are ready to adjust idle mixture, follow the directions in the book, start witih idle mixture screws 1 & 1/2 turns out from LIGHTLY seated, the boat/motor MUST BE in the water to provide the proper exhaust back-pressure and shifted into Forward gear to give the correct load on the motor.

Repost your findings and any additional questions you may have.

Re: Not getting any power

Pull your car or truck up near and jump from that battery to the starter and ground on the motor, will it crank Now? If not, remove the starter and either take it into a starter rebuilder or take it apart and clean it, lightly sand the commutator clean, replace worn brushes and springs, lightly lube the bushings.
