What's with some people? Yesterday, my wife, son and I went for a little boat ride into one of the quiet sheltered bays here. We met up with the wife's brother and family. They were anchored and had some friends from out of town with them. The 'friends' had a 26' Fountain with an impressive 540" bowtie in it. He asked us if we'd like to go for a 'spin'. I told the fella I love the speed but don't care for the 'tricks' at all. I have another friend that has hurt people in his boat and don't want to be another boating statistic. He laughed and said he's a responsible boater and that would never happen... friend of the family right? We leave the cove and head out across the inlet. It's an impressive ride 10... 20... 30... 40... 50... 60... 70 mph! Five of us in the boat (just the adults, we left the kids with the smart people that didn't come for the ride) and flying along smoothly. Here's where it goes bad, the knob decides it's time to show off... he pulls hard to port... harder... harder... you guessed it, we spun out at 60 (ish). My sister-inlaw flies into side, my wife and I bang heads, the boat goes right around just about rolls (AND I MEAN JUST ABOUT!) My head was inches from the water... going backwards at speed. A bunch of water comes in and we're all soaked. The knob turns around and asks if we're ok... I said that he'd better take us back, before something bad happens to my knuckles and his face. We got back untied and left. I've seen this crap before, I don't think anyone else in the boat understands how lucky we were that the boat didn't roll. That was a close call for us... and the knob.

Re: Not impressed

I know exactly what you are talking about. We have a friend with a 37' Fountain and another with a big Scarab. They used to take us on the Poker runs with them. Going wide open across the bay with another 100+ ciggarette boats is one of the scariest things I ever did. I was literally crying I was so scared. He (the so called captain) was drunk. He didn't give a hoot about the safety of his passengers. He was a show off and put us in danger more times than I'd like to remember.

It never impresses me when guys show off.

Re: Not impressed

I think that would have been a good time to risk a mutiny charge and tied the knob to the bow rail and take everyone back to the safe haven. That is no way to try to impress anybody!!!!Sounds like more dollars than sense!!!!!!

Re: Not impressed

Magster, I am glad you and the rest are here to tell about it. Jerks like this are what give boating a bad reputation. Hopefully when he becomes a statistic, he does not take anyone else with him.

As the Darwin awards suggest...

The show-offs need to be removed from the gene pool.

H.

Re: Not impressed

ah hahahahahahaha! Get this, the knob is from out of town and he was spending the long weekend here in his boat (boated over from the mainland). This morning his boat wouldn't start and he dosen't have any tools here, nor do my inlaws. Well guess what? What comes around goes around this time. Unless it was something major, I could've had him on his way easily... NOT! He had to take the ferry to the mainland, get his trailer, get back on the ferry, come pick up his boat and get back on ferry to get home. I'd say $300 in ferry costs and it took all day :p He left his boat at the marina our families are at and when he came to pull it out the wife and I were on the bridge soaking up a few rays and having a few drinks (not what ya' think, we stayed tied up). I'll tell ya'... I've never been so happy with someone else's misfortune :) That made my weekend.

Ah! There is occasionally some justice in the world. Thanks for letting us hear the end of the story.
