trying to find the right lower shift cable, but no numbers stamped on the current one. or they are just worn off. setup is mercruiser 898 series, 350 v8, 898 outdrive. late 70's, early 80's is best guess. engine is not original, not even sure if it's mercruiser, but the rest is merc. sierra lists numerous cable numbers, all stating fits merc, alpha and gen II. i know i'm pre-alpha, but cannot find a glm, sierra, morse, mallory, or anyone else's part number that specifically states my application. i know i do not have an oddball setup. i'm also sure i don't know how to read correctly. but any help is greatly appreciated. thanks for bearing with a not too bright.

Good luck, you'll need an extra-deep 9/16 socket to change it, and you ought to check the alignment (need an alignment tool) whil you have it off.

If you use kit number 865436A03, it's the same cable as the 865436A02 But includes the install gasket kit and the shift cable bellows. Don't even think about changing that cable and using the old shift cable bellows.
For sure, use the OEM cable kit, they are SOOOOOOO much better than aftermarket.

you the man DonS, already ahead of you tho. new bellows kit already put in, cable seemed fine last week, but upon trying to get it adjusted right, found out cable is bent inside sheathing. boat hasn't seen water yet, so the bellows kit i already put in should be fine i assume. thanks for the numbers 45auto and DonS, your help is awesome.
