Hello
I just finished changing the oil on my 1988 alpha One drive and I am not sure about the color so I posted a few pictures for someone to analyze.

I pulled about 36 oz of old Brown oil (not clear) and I filled it with the quicksilver gear lube which is dark green in color from the bottom with a pump until it come out of the vent hole.
The drain plug had a few metal shavings on the magnet but I did not find any metal shavings in the old oil.

What do you guys think about the oil color and the shaving in the drain plug?

I have no idea what type of oil the owner put in last year before I bought the boat

Thanks
Gabriel

The magnet isn't great, but you also don't have any idea how long it's been since the lube was changed.
Since you put the proper lube in, just change it during winterization (or every 100 hours whichever comes first) and see how it looks then. The color didn't look like a water problem in any way. Just some after market lube of some sort.
If you have the proper lube now and the drive sounds and works ok, then you should be fine.
