not sure the year but told 25hp Mariner

The engine was running a couple of months ago. Fixed impeller and is now pumping water. The engine attempts to fire and backfires when primed. Could this have sheared the key under the flywheel and thrown off the timing. Carburator rebuilt also but with old gaskets. New gaskets on order for a complete rebuild. How should I proceed?

I doubt if you sheared the key never saw one do it, rebuild the carb go from there. When in doubt of the year give the serial number

The serial number is A148102. Is there a way of finding out the approximate year is was made so that I can by the best shop manual for it?d

bad reeds or timing is off
