Not sure what I am going to do with this.

A long story short. Someone gave me this Westfield for free. All I wanted was the trailer. But after looking at some of the projects you guys have completed, I may follow suit. Only problem is; I have 0 experience with boats bigger than a canoe. I know everyone likes pictures, so I took a bunch:

Looks like a great project !!! About the worst problem you could find is a rotted transom ; the rest is fiberglass . Even that problem is worth the effort to fix . My 15' Oxford handles like a jetski - a _ _ _ _ load of fun !! peter

Go for it. Personally I'd start with the boat itself. Clean out all the dirt and grime, start seeing what you can salvage and what can be thrown away. Get the inside cleaned up so you have a neat area to work with. See what works and what doesn't as far as lights and stuff go. Maybe take off those rod holders unless you want them. Figure out where the wires go and what they operate. Don't start cutting wires and ripping things out. Save that for later if necessary.

Write all this stuff down as you go you'll be happy later.

Clean up the outside of the hull, maybe a decent wash, compounding and waxing. Make it look presentable. This way if the motor is trash and you don't want to keep it at least you have a presentable clean hull someone will maybe want to buy. See if anything made out of wood is rotten or not. Minor rot can be fixed with sheets of fiberglass. Major rot can be harder to fix. There are books written about restoring old boats like this one. Maybe get one from your local library.

That believe it or not is the hard part. Getting that motor going is a tad easier. If it is shot then your job is to find a used one that fits. Any old Evinrude will work great since Evinrude and MFG were partners back in the day.

You are a lucky man! These old MFGs are the greatest thing. A lot of fun, cheap to keep up, lightweight for their size, and very strong for their weight. Almost everything in you photos looks good and useable, and those seats are original and rebuildable, BTW. Transom fix is not easy but it is not complex either.

If you are not convinced and are within 250 miles of Vermont I'll help you out with the, eh, ahem, disposal of the, ahem, piece of junk. :)

Yeah, you definitely don't want that junker , it's probably best to dispose of it. I'll travel 250 miles from Virginia to help you out and hey, I won't charge you anything to remove that ratty old 70hp either - HA! Between Mark and I the whole Atlantic seaboard should be covered.

I suppose that if you did want to fix it up yourself that it might be a terrific platform for a beginner. Seriously though, go for it and ask any questions you have here at iboats, these people are GENIUSES!!!:D

Re: Not sure what I am going to do with this.

Thanks all for the enthuisiastic disposal offers, but I think my brother and I have decided we needed yet another project. :p

Cleaned the clutter out of this past weekend. I really doesn't seem to be in that bad of shape. Going to hook up a battery over the long weekend and see what we can't get to work. I think the little bit of wiring thats there is pretty much shot, but I'm not worried about wires. The transom will most definately be the most daunting task. We are currently looking at how to remove the motor. That sucker looks pretty heavy. And once its off, gotta find a good place to store it.

It looks like the brunt of the work is going to wait until late fall/spring.
