Re: Not trying to be PC, actually anti racist

What if the person doesn't know they're being racist? I had a kid in a class once talk about how he got "jewed" in a deal. Another talked about how he "n*****-rigged" his car. In both cases there was no racism intended, but you can bet I pointed out to them that such language wasn't appropriate in a college classroom, in the workplace, or around people you don't know really well.

Tell me, how is someone, not being racist, offensive to you? I say 'jerry-rigged' or 'jimmy-rigged' on a regular basis. I hear people say 'mickey-moused' as well. I switch between them, as I'm not entirely sure which one is the common use of the phrase. Am I racist? According to some I am, just for using these terms. I'm describing a not properly performed fix. Am I referring to any race? No. I don't even know a Jerry or a Jimmy, or a Mickey for that matter.. do you?

What exactly about any of those makes anyone a racist? Frankly, if someone is looking to be offended or insulted, they will be no matter what is said. If you or anyone is so sensitive they cannot bear hear a term which is descriptive of a verb, avoid people altogether. Odds are, verbs will be used in nearly every sentence you hear. Sure, jewed or n*gger-rigged might have been used by a racist, that doesn't make the terms flags for racists everywhere. After all, I recall hearing n*gger used more by black people than every other race combined.

As for "jewing", I've heard it meant as "screwed out of money" many times. How does that not make it a word meaning "screwed out of money"? Would adding it to a dictionary make it a 'proper' term? The few outspoken jewish people I have known screwed me over for a few measly thousand. In my experience, that makes the term poetic for those few people. Then again, I've also been screwed by plenty of other races, too. Does that mean every jewish person is a scam artist? That's silly. Is the definition of "jewing" limited to any one race? Absolutely not. Would using "screwed by a jewish person" make you feel better about that person? Maybe he was just racist, or maybe he was just using a term meaning "screwed"; It depends on the individual person.. or are you just assuming they are all just racist? Who, exactly, decides what is considered a racist term? Racists? You? Is there a word lottery? Are we all banned from using a word forever because it was once used by some racist idiot?

If you only knew how many products were used every day which used to be called terms you consider racist. Somehow the names being changed made the products (and the companies who made them) all good again, even though nothing else had changed. Magic, I guess.

If you used the above description to characterize the local newscaster I'd say "that's her all right." If you used it to characterize my wife, I'd get angry at you. Saying to a colleague: "There's a Hispanic girl in class who always falls asleep" seems fine to me. Saying "You--the Mexican girl in the corner--wake up" doesn't.

How on Earth do you think a newscaster and your wife are different? You think describing your wife and describing someone else is different? Is your wife somehow not responsible for how she looks and everyone else is?

So, a girl falling asleep in your class isn't rude, but pointing out a Mexican girl as Mexican is rude? Where do you get your equality?

Seriously, it's not the car, it's the driver. It's not the race, it's the attitude. But I can tell you that a lot of people I know feel a lot more comfortable in their own skins if people around them use language that's not designed to "put them in their place" or to describe their limitations or their place in the social order.

I have often been flipped off by some stranger in a car who cut me off.. my life is affected forever! That gesture was designed to put me in my place and I'm forever scarred because of it. Tell your friends to grow up. We have a black president.. if they somehow feel limited, they are the ones to blame, not some words (or in my case, the finger) of a prejudiced stranger.

I'm an Atheist and I run across crackpot theists all of the time. I've been called some wacko names by some wacko people. Does that somehow make me believe in a god? Heck no. It makes me believe these wackos are nut jobs. No more, no less. If somehow being called a name by some nut job racist makes them change their life to mirror what they see them as.. they obviously agreed with them to begin with. Otherwise they would see them as the nut jobs they are and move on to more rational people.

You can only be hurt by the truth.. and even then.. it is the truth, so what are you upset about?

Gentlemen...... this thread has really reflected some racism examples which we have all have witnessed. There are some harsh circumstances here.

I think it is time to close this thread so we do not make any member's here feel uncomfortable.

In the spirit of remaining family friendly I will close it before it creates any hostility among us.
