Not winterized?

Recently acquired a 2001 Tahoe Q3 that was not properly winterized by family friend. Will not turn over what-so-ever. Makes a click or knock when I turn the key. Has plenty of battery. Any ideas before I see a mechanic?

Re: Not winterized?

Welcome to iboats yopauly.
I am going to consider this as an outboard motor on the Q3. Please provide more info as to which engine an such.

Inboard 3.0L GM engine. I am hoping it is just a poor battery.

Thanks, now let's get this to where you will get some answers, Merc/ Volvo and OMC I/O or Inboard Engine Problem forum.

When did it last run?
Clean your cable/battery connections.....
Pull the spark plugs....
Will it spin? If not, will it turn with a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt?
Spray some marvel mystery oil in first....JK
BTW, welcome to iboats :)

Re: Not winterized?

Ran last summer, not since mid July I think. I am curious what the knock noise is. It comes from the side of the engine, where some type of electrical connection goes into the motor. Sorry, not mechanically inclined when it comes to engines! I haven't tried to turn the crankshaft yet. The guages, lights, trim all come on when the key is turned on, with current batery. I have charged both batteries, but they will not charge fully. Hope that is my problem

Make sure the starter is engaging the flywheel correctly. SOmetimes if it has come loose it can make a nasty grinding sound...

If you are not mech inclined and it was not winterized ,dont waste your time .Pay a mech to check it out.May be more damage than the motor is worth.

Re: Not winterized?

I just had to have my starter rebuilt, because it had a lot of muck inside from getting wet. After I replaced the solenoid, it still just clicked. So off it came.

But if you aren't mechanically inclined with engines, and don't particularly care to learn, just take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

If you do want to learn, get a manual, and start poking and proding. There's only a couple of bolts that hold the starter on, and it can be taken to most auto parts stores to be bench tested.

edit: Oh, and when you attempt to start the boat, does the voltage drop? Does it appear to be loaded when holding the key?

Re: Not winterized?

What do you mean by not properly winterized? If water was left in the engine and manifold by not draining it and it freezes in winter...boy are you in for trouble!

Can you get a good battery or jump start it off your car? Batteries that don't charge up fully may not have enough cranking power left in them. They will still work work lights and low drain items, but not for cranking.

Re: Not winterized?

You know you can't start it out of the water or you'll damage the w/p impeller right?

Pull the dipstick - is the crankcase full of milky oil?? Overfull?

Those are signs of a frozen and cracked block- you'll need a new engine and exhaust manifolds.

Re: Not winterized?

yopauly, you got very lucky! If you plan to keep that boat long, either take care of all the maintance or have somebody do it yearly! Make sure to do all your engine testing with muffs on, do not run it without them!

Glad it worked out that easy though!!!!
