Re: Notch for timing is missing

The circumference of the balancer where the grove is = 25 inches. With a specification of BTDC 10degs., that will be .69 inches on both sides from the center.

With the engine as left rotation, and if I am facing the engine, the alignment should be reference mark = the rotating timing mark that is on the left of the groove Please confirm that this is correct.

Would there be a need for more than 1 line of .69”?

Put a mark at .69 for 10°BTDC, then another at 1.38 for 20°BTDC, and the last one at 2.07 for 30°BTDC. This will give you marks when checking your advance timing as well as your base timing.
Don't forget you have the Thunderbolt V ignition and you have to put the distributor into base timing mode so you can set the timing, and adjust the carb mixture.

Thanks Don. Going to Sears to get the advanced time lite. Your forgot to confirm - If I am facing the engine, and the engine is left rotation, I will put these 3 marks on the left side of the groove, right?

If you are going after an advance type timing light, you don't need any marks. You just adjust the light to 10° and line up the 0 marks.
Then for advance, you set the speed and adjust the light to the advance that lines up the marks.

I just bought the time lite and I did not know that this devie can be adjusted for degrees. It seems to get easier. I just saved a mechanic expense and still have my own time lite that I can use every year. Thank you very much.
