Nothing at the pee hole

I just tried and started up my 69 evinrude 9.5. and there is no water coming out the pee hole. I just filled a small bucket just over the cavitation plate.

Maybe I should use more water. I ran for just 30 sec or so but all I saw was what looked to be steam or exhaust. When I shut off the powerhead seemed a bit hot for my liking. Should I try a bigger bucket or just go ahead the change with an impeller kit.

I have not worked on this motor before, but have changed the impeller im my 1956 Johnson 15hp.

Is the change the same or is their more involved with this motor?

If anyone can explain the process in the 9.5 rude I would be gratefull.

Thanks......

try bigger bucket, it is very similar, except, you drop the lower unit about 3/4 of an inch to get to the shift linkage connector.

Some are easy and some not the 5.5 evinrude fisherman required removal of the powerhead, I don't know about your engine but water in a bucket only to the cav plate won't do it, the waterpump must be submerged completely and it sits above the cav plate, I would try it again this time with the water to the level 4-6" above the plate and see what gives, there was probably enough water that you didn't burn up the impeller, but chances are it's needing replacement reguardless.

Thanks guys ,

I'll replace the impeller for good measure and try again with a larger pail.
