The switch you are showing is a neutral lock-out switch. It connect's the solinoid to ground when the control box is in neutral position. That second terminal has to be connected to ground for the starter to crank over.

So that would have to be the biggest problem at this point. I mean if it isn't even grounded then there is no way it could possibly work. So I can just run a wire to any ground?

Would it be worth my time to open up the power pack and clean all of the connections in there too? I plan to run a ground wire to that NLO switch tomorrow and see what happens.
Thanks for all the help - I will keep everyone updated.

I really just want to get on the water. It isn't every day in March that Indiana has 60 some degree days.

Look at the switch ... where the white wire is connected to the switch ... metal plate on the switch and both terminals are on the same metal plate. No need for another wire.(there is no other wire)

This switch is self grounding when in neutral or low throttle.I have to admit I'm not sure which.Different in different years.

I don't think you have the correct solenoid. This switch is sending ground to the solenoid, but the solenoid you have is trying to send out positive current on that same solenoid terminal while you are cranking the engine. That's because it is the wrong solenoid.

DHP

What confuses me about all of this is that the engine was running in it's current state (with that exact solenoid) so maybe the solenoid is bad then. I plan to replace it no matter what with the correct marine solenoid.

bman your solenoid part # is 0383622. have you investigated BRP evinrude.com. it has diagrams of your total engine. a good johnny/rude dealer should have it. and Napa auto carries a lot of marine stuff. they have a 600 page marine parts manual.

Actually was the motor startable when you bought it? What the last owner did to get it running doesn't count.

We have to deal with what is happening now.

DHP

As I mentione earlier, if you look at the pic of the solenoid there should be two more wires connected to the top post, 1 red from the terminal block and the other red or red/purple with the fused connection. Where are those wires connected now?

The last owner was my best friend and we fished off this boat all of the time. It was running perfect until he shut it off to fish this one cove and then we could never get it started again. Thats when I bought it from him.

Re: nothing happens but a click and choke moves (pics)

there is a wire coming from the solenoid that has a fuse in it because I took out the fuse to check and make sure it wasn't blown - which wire that is I can't tell you from looking at the picture. My boat is at my father-in-laws house so I'm unable to run out and look at it.
I hope to make it over there tonight and look at it a little more and maybe get some more detailed pics of the setup. I have almost decided to just wait to do anymore trouble shooting until I can get the right solenoid for it.

Don't laugh but I've had good luck with the old electrictrical parts, including a 1960 solinoid at the local John Deere Dealership. Price was right too.

Worth a try if all else fails.
