Hi

could some one point me in the right direction here please?

I went out on my bayliner 175 2004 this morning into the med in spain the boat started first turn as it all ways does. i got about a half km out i turned the boat off and started putting life jackets on friends.

went to start the boat up and nothing the dash was dead but the trim still had power.

I made sure the cut off key was right and run switch and the battery was solid, there was a 20 amp fuse blown i replaced it and still dead.

I checked the trip switch under the hood and that was still in.

Im thinking its a fuse somewhere but thats a guess there is just no power when key is turned to start. any help would be great as i dont speak much spanish so dont really want to take it to a boat shop here.

Thanks

get a voltmeter and start testing at ignition switch, could be bad battery connection or loose ground. check main circuit breaker on mercruiser if it has one

Re: Nothing happens when ignition key is turned to start

The 3.0L had 2 electical setups, one was a circuit breaker (usually with a red button) you need to check it if you have one. But check it with a meter and see if you have power at both terminals. If you don't have that CB, you may have a square shaped fues on the large starter terminal. Check it with the meter also and see if you have power. And who knows, you may have both.
If you have power there, check at the ignition switch. Do you have power at the red/purple wire on the switch? If you do, turn the switch to run (not start) and see if you have power on the purple wire.

Why don't you get a meter and start doing some tests?

had a similar experience some time ago. traced wires under the dash and found one of the small BUSS fuses blown. this was an in-line fuse that was close to 25 years old. same symptoms as yours.

Re: Nothing happens when ignition key is turned to start

Right i tested the ignition switch all seemed well.

now when i turn the ignition from run to start there is a clicking noise coming from just under the red circuit breaker button and after about 30 turns around the starter motor started smoking so i quit.

when i turn the run switch to off still the clicking is there. i have looked for fuses and cant find any that have blown.

over the last 2 months i do remember when i have tried starting from run to start it never turned over then on second attempt it would fire up. this happened about 3 times. i have a sneaky feeling its something to do with the neutral switch???

Have you tried turning the engine over manually............like with a wrench with the spark plugs removed??
