You should be able to adjust the shift cable under the cowling, you don't sa ywhat motor you have but mine is on the starboard(drivers side) there are 2 cables, shift and throttle with knurled knob on each one.

Find the shift cable and verify which way it moves when shifting into reverse and turn the knob that way.

You can correct a small amount like this altough if it shifted right before you cracked the case there may be a bigger problem.

What is happening is the gears are always turning if the engine is running, there is a small pinion gear on top with forward and reverse facing that like an upisde down U and a clutch dog in between, when you shift you slide the clutch dog forward or back to engage a gear and it isn't sliding far enough to engage and the ears are jumping out of the gear.

If you can't adjust it out there may be a bigger issue.

Sounds like you put a Band Aid on a bullet hole!!!

You need to pull your lower unit apart. Quit screwing around with it and trying to put it into gear. Get a manual and take it apart and replace whatever is wasted before you destroy anything else with whatever is broken destroying everything else in your lower unit!

I will disagree, it is already jacked up so you aren't going to hurt anything that isn't already hurt so you may as well run it till it pukes.

I would start looking for a new lower though, that failure could come sooner than later.

If whatever you hit caused the shift adjustment to change you did some pretty serious damage and I doubt you will be able to save the lower casing even if you do get a new gearset so you may as well run it like it is until it breaks or you find a new one but definately start looking for a new one.

I found one on Ebay with a prop for 150 bucks, don't know fi you can find a deal like that btu worth a try.
