I have a 24 ft. Bunk trailer for a pontoon boat. I wanted to change the brakes from drum to Disc. The wheels on it are 10 inch and the tire size is 20.5x8x10 .Load rite says that no one makes disc brakes for that small of a wheel. There new trailers use 13 inch wheels. So if I went out and bought 4- 13 inch wheels and tire's and then got the disc brakes to fit the 13` inch wheels this should work ,right. What size 13 inch wheels will I need. The boat weighs in at around 2400.lbs ,I don't know how much the trailer weighs. I'm only putting disc on the front so do I have to change the rear drums. the lug pattern is 5 lugs.I know that when I get the disc brakes the wheels will have to match the bolt pattern. Now I'm not sure about the rear wheels besides changing the wheel size do I have to change anything. I'm not worried about the fenders for now ,I can always take them off.I can get loadrite bolt ons any time.Any good Ideas. Thanks.

Re: Now here's a problem.

Kinda late now to ask what size 13's when you already bought them.
But...........
Are you planning to have operating brakes on all wheels?
Or just the front wheels? You can't mix drums with discs so I am guessing.....
your only going to have front brakes (disc).
Then you do not have to change the rear axle hubs.
Just install the same rim and tire as you have to for the fronts.
I would likely run rims and tires that have at least the same capacity as the current tires.

I don't think disc brakes will clear a 13" rim, maybe someone makes them. On a tandem axle, put the brakes on the rear if only braking one axle. That should be plenty considering your weight. 13" ST tires will typically be of higher capacity than your current 10", and the fact that you've got a tandem axle and a relatively light boat makes it pretty easy. Will your fenders clear a 13" wheel or were you planning on moving them?

First of all I haven't bought anything yet. I'm only going to get one set of disk brakes for now The trailer only came with one set of drum brakes. The more I think about it I may just get the drums checked out and see what they need if anything. I just re boarded the bunks and had new LED tail lights put on. It's an 2006 Five Starr trailer.I'm hoping to go to the marina this weekend and see what I can get done.

i would look to see if your going to rub tires, your changing out 10 inch for 13 inch adding 3 extra inches between axles. raises one question why are you switching? seems like a lot of work and money for? i am guessing if you have a newer vehical the brakes on 3k lbs trailer weather they are disk or drums wont matter to much. being a 2006 those drum brakes should work great still. my dad had drum brakes on his camper for over 10 years never replaced them and put a ton of milage on it[yes i know camper vs boat trailer, boat goes into the water].

Ayuh,... Not sayin' ya ain't Right, but yer sayin' 2 different things...

A 10" disc brake assembley will Not fit inside a 10" Wheel...
You'd need something around 6" or 8" disc brake assembley...

I know all new wesco tandem pontoon trailers come with disc brakes and 10" wheels. So I think these are made for 10" wheels. Mine came with drums in '08 and they are working fine for me.

Re: Now here's a problem.

This may not be as cut & dry as one thinks. Changing hubs means they must match the spindles. The brakes shown in the above picture are for a 3500# axle which requires 1-1/16 outer and 1-3/8 inner bearings. A 2000# axle typically has 1-1/16 inner and outer bearings. Better research this some more before plopping down cash for new stuff that may not work.

While there may be disk brakes that work with 10" wheels, the ones in the picture you posted most certainly will not. They require at least 13" wheels. (I've looked for disk brakes that would work with my current 12" wheels, and I can't find any.)
