Been a machinist most of my life, very active away from work, fishing, boating, hunting. I told my wife when we got married, don't bother buying me a ring, because I will not wear it. She wasn't real happy, but oh well, I still have all my digits!

here is one way to tell if a man is married or not. go to a grocery store, single man buys #1 "dirty mags." #2 condoms (if he respects his health) #3 beer (good quality) Married man #1 femine products (for wifes time of month) #2 groceries (anything that HAS to be cooked or prepared) #3 beer (the cheaper the better... has to get food first) lol<br />sorry but that is how I see things.<br /><br />btw, married 16 yrs easter '05

Lost three rings. I break out if I wash my hands with a ring on. Two went that way. The last one she bought too small so I put it on my little finger till could get resized. Out fishing and guess what. Fell into the water. That was 12 years ago. Never bought me another one. She always thought I was BSing her. <br /> Still married after 26 so i think she has figured it out.

After sending the last msg. remembered two othe happenstance's with rings. Had a tech while I was in the ARMY who refused to take his ring off while working on electronic components. Told him many times to take it off. His reply was "my wife will kill me". <br /> Have you ever smelled flesh burning? His ring made contact across a 48v power supply and it didn't smell really good. Pushed him away from it(luckily he was on a rolling chair). He never wore it again.<br /> The second one was from a friend who was stationed in Germany during the late 60's. They were on a train, with their artillery, and during a stop he jumped down to secure a cable that had come loose. The train started moving and his ring got caught whle he was tring to get back on. He was minus a finger. <br /> I do not wear a ring. Will not ever. For those who and do physical work, good luck.

The ring on my finger doesn't bother me near as mauch as the one she put through my nose!

Lost my wedding ring on the bottom of the Sandy River, along with a toenail, while helping an ex boyfriend of my wife's and some stranger's dog back out of the rapids they were getting pulled into. Yikes! Never replaced it; still married after 13 years.

When I was in the Navy the Captains of both submarines I was on required all personnel to either remove their rings or to have them safety cut. <br /><br />Safety cut means that the ring was cut almost all the way through on the bottom side and then buffed so as not to cut or snag. The theory is that if you are hanging by the ring it will break before your finger gets pulled off.<br /><br />I have heard that civilian jewelers will do this too...apparently, a lot of people want to wear the rings and keep the finger to wear it on.<br /><br />Personally, I quit wearing mine right after I met the first guy I knew who had lost a finger in that manner.<br /><br />Just my $0.02 worth,<br />Joe

Hey EBB, I can relate the weld berries. My wedding band still has a big berry welded to it. I only had been wearing it just a short while after our wedding. I told my wife that rings and me don't get along to well due to the kind of work that I get into. Said I would give it a try, but the first time I have a problem with it (and hope it is not the most extreme case of injury) that it is coming off. I haven't worn it now for the last 6 years of our marriage.<br /><br />I was welding when a weld berry burnt through my gloves and hit my wedding band. The berry is still welded to the ring. Of course it burnt the heck out of my ring finger. The scar is pretty much gone now and so is the wearing of any jewelry.<br /> Wife finally agreed that jewelry and my job profession will never get along.

Air force Great falls Montana winter of 1954 crew chief prefliting F84F slipped on wing his ring hung up between aileron and wing tip when I went out to finish preflight had to remove finger and tendons before aileron could operate.

Several years ago I was out with a group of friends on a sailboat I owned. Had the lifeline unhooked and the pelican hook hanging almost in the water. A lady friend jumped in the water and caught her wedding ring on the pelican hook. She was lucky and did not lose the finger, but she sure had a nasty looking cut.

I can't think of a single reason to wear a ring. They are a hazzard anytime you take your hands out of your pockets.

When I was farming I always left my ring at home after learning the hard way. I jumped from a grain truck during harvest. Didn't catch hard enough to pull my finger off, but the ring was not so round anymore and I was sore for days. A few months later I forgot to take it off one day. We ended up sorting hogs that day. I had my hand on top of a home made gate when an old sow hit the gate full speed. The gate swung open, my ring caught, I was pulled off my feet and thrown 10 feet or so. Leaves a whole different meaning to the phrase "pull my finger".

All these horror stories drive home a point I've known for years. I have been a proffessional mechanic for over 10 years, and I wear a wedding ring. When I first started in this business I was helping a friend roll a car over to take something off the underside. the car rolled on it's side and the car door (used for leverage) closed on my hand, latched all the way. The ONLY thing that saved my fingers from injury/possible amputation was the ring I was wearing. This was told to me by the attending ER physician. Amazingly I had no breaks sprains or anything besides an oval ring and red marks across all four fingers. <br />When I jump down from my boat or anything I always lauch from my right (non-ring wearing) hand. I guess I've just been lucky. But all-in-all I agree with Indymike, That's why I don't wear any other jewelry and generally remove my web-cloth banded, plastic/rubber cased watch.
