My Merc 4.3L AlphaOne ran great all day on Saturday. However, after I got home and while flushing it after saltwater use with the garden hose and muffs, it started blowing some white smoke off by the prop and the gimball/transom area. I ran and immediately stopped the engine, panicked, got irrated, just to end up forgetting take a look at the the temp gauge.... :(

First thing that came to mind was the impeller had gone bad.

On Sunday morning and with a cold engine, I started it again with hose and muffs attached. This time I was expecting the white smoke as in the previous day, but did not see any at all. Actually, the engine ran flawless as always. I let in ran at 1,000-1,200 RPMs and it never overheated. After a good warm up of approx 10 mins, it reached its normal operating temp of about 170 degrees, and remained there, again, no smoke, no overheating.

What could had caused for smoke to come out in first place? Forgot to mention that on my way back to the boat ramp, I had to navigate through a No Wake Zone with lots of weeds floating on the water. Could this be the culprit?

Is there anything else that I need to checkout and be concerned of?

Thanks, appreciate all responces.

Smoke, or steam?

if I run the water too low on my muffs, I will see steam.

this could be because there is garbage from the "weeds", or the water was too low, or you were running it to high an RPM.

Smoke, as in white smoke may be a problem. if it smells sweet, it is coolant, otherwise oil, neither are good.

intermittant, I would say water delivery, try pulling off and backflushing to clean out the bits.
