ahhhhh come on .... the only unusual thing I can see is the trim fins on it ... but I have seen many on small motors like that ...... so unusual to you might not be so unusual to me ...... :)

Re: Now I've seen everything . . .

Sorry deejay, you have waaaaaaay more 'sperience with small boats and OBs than me, but do you really think that a relatively massive batwing, surface piercing, horizontally debilitating, stern jacking, trim altering, hydrofoil "stabiliser" is doing anything but slowing down a 5 bhp OB?

I actually have no experience with kickers etc. I do have a 5 bhp OB on a 14 ft. aluminum boat that does plane. It is also very trim sensitive, so I can't see how sumpin' like that could be anything but . . . uhhhhh . . . weird. I should do some testing, but I'm a) skeered and b) not sure how I could hide that wing while launching :$ 8)

I know they work on some stuff, some times . . .

tommays, you should suggest them to your sailboat racing friends, I'm sure they'd help those too . . . Why not? It worked for Australia II . . .

So is this like your signature nemesis QC? Like Bondo and his Bayliners or Garfield and his Mondays? Cute. :p

Re: Now I've seen everything . . .

You guys really have it in for planing fins...
I put one on my 18 ft aluminum cc. after making the mistake of allowing a 28hp to end up bolted to the transom. It made a whole world of a difference. It planed out much quicker and I think it added an extra 4 knots onto the top end speed. (A whopping 12 kts) And for those that say it's bad at high speeds, my uncle has one on his 16 ft. aluminum with a 30hp on it that I've gotten up to 35 mph, and it handles pretty wellat that speed. If I used my 12' jon boat that I have a 5.5hp on more, I'd buy one for it too.

Re: Now I've seen everything . . .

While I consider foils a last resort solution I have had very good results on a 15 ft aluminum 50 hp Starcraft
runabout and an 18ft 120 hp Cobia bow rider.
They were doelfins and bolted right on with no fiddling.
The Cobia was on the boat about 4 years until yhey destroyed the lower unit on a rock at wot.The Starcraft about 8 years until we changed over to a pontoon.
I think on a 10 or 12 footer with a small motor a tiller extension is probably better.

Re: Now I've seen everything . . .

I agree that there are some applications where they help. I guess I believe that there is always a better fix: trim, weight shifting (tiller), height on transom, trim tabs, propeller etc.

When I see one on a 225, I cry, when I see one on a 5, I laugh . . . Like I said, maybe I should test one but I have never seen truly favorable test results. They almost always slow down a properly set up boat.

Howver, with adjustable trim tabs and SmartTabs, planing speed is dramatiaclly reduced, in my case a 20 footer and two 23 footers, planing speed is down around 12 MPH, and a reasonably efficient plane around 13.5. Trim tabs have no negative impact on top speed if installed correctly. Trim tabs, Doelfins, hydrofoils etc. can all mask a problem. I do not personally believe that the fins can enhance a boat that is right. It is entirely possible that I am wrong.
