So I just got this motor and I have a couple questions about it. First of all is there a stamped ser.# on it some where? the motor has been repainted black and Merc. sticker on it now. I am 95% sure its a NS5B. newer model.
Secondly I am changing the water pump out and dont know the direction the splines should go. When I opened it up there was only two blades left on it and they were straight of coarse. Any help would be apreciated, Thanks

Re: NS5B Impeller direction

A 5B is not a newer model. Tohatsu has not marketed 2-strokes below 40 hp in North America in years. They did, however make 5 hp motors for Merc, which are indeed Tohatsu/Nissan units "under the hood". If actually a Tohatsu or Nissan branded motor, the model and s/n label would be on the transom clamp.

When servicing the water pump, I would recommend installing the complete wp kit (including cup and plate), instead of just the impeller, for best results. Not critical which way the vanes are installed, as they will flip into the proper direction as the motor runs. That said, once you are reinstalling the upper housing onto the new impeller, just turn the driveshaft clockwise as you lower the housing into place, and the vanes will correctly aligned.

There is a serial # plate on top of the yoke under the front of the cowling. It may be painted over. If it's not there, I'd be concerned about your motors history.

Having JUST done a WP in a 5b last week, I can tell you there are some tricks. Search this forum for my posts and read what I learned (the hard way).

Or it could actually be a Merc -- a "Tohatsu in Merc clothing", since Tohatsu made quite a few 5 hp motors for Merc.

Well I did it and it was way easier than I thought. No problems at all. I did have to play with the shifting rod a few times so it would lock in place in revese. Took it out on Saturday and it just purred all day.
thanks .
