NS8B carb woes

I have a NS8B that I picked up cheap, but the carb is all corroded so I found a NS5B carb and put it on. The motor starts but wont run more than a minuet. Acts like it is running out of gas, will restart with the choke, but dies after a minuet or less. I suspect that I need to change out the main jet and slow jet? Are there more parts I will need to make this work?

Motor s/n is 3B2-1 66876, can I determine model year from this?

Thanks,
Paul

Re: NS8B carb woes

Firstly, that carb is way too small for the 8B. Probably wouldn't develop more than 4 hp, even if set up correctly.

Secondly, since the venturi size is wrong, the only thing you would accomplish by richening it would be to make the mixture too rich, with resultant fouling.

Thirdly, the carb you put on is likely varnished up, and needs a proper cleaning in carb dip to work.

If you want this motor to work, you need a carb from an 8 or 9.8.

Re: NS8B carb woes

Why not get a rebuild kit for the 8hp carb? I rebuilt the carb for my NS8B for about 50 bucks. Go to internetoutboards and order the rebuild kit for your carb. It was pretty simple, just make sure to clean it out thoroughly.
