NSF18B EP Auto By-Starter

Can anyone tell me how to check-out or trouble-shoot the Auto By-Starter.
Motor takes for ever to start cold and will start right up when warmed up. I have the Nissan Service Manual but don't find any information on how to check it out. I know the unit is expensive so I don't want to replace a good one. Thanks for your help.

Think of it as an "automatic electric choke".

Pull it out and hit it with 12 volts. If the needle moves(slowly) it's working. No movement equals defective.

Thanks I couldn't find anything in the manual on this and did not want to burn it up with the wrong voltage.
