I am working at getting my 1st boat and I have been looking at getting a SS for a few weeks now and have looked at some potential victims. I am expecting to replace a complete floor and some control and engine repairs with the budget that I am working with but should I be weary of this one or does it look complete? It appears that there is some light damage to the bow and the trailer. The trailer can be replaced but should I run away from the dents on the side or can they be repaired?

As far as I can tell it has not been used since 2005 and most likely has been outside the whole time also.

After seeing all the amazing work that has been done here what better place to ask. Sorry for the poor quality photos since I was using a phone.

Compaired to the 16 SS I just rebuilt your in boat heaven. The dents won't hurt a thing. Mabey I am just not sentmental enough to worry about a few flaws, thre right color of Paint will hide most of it. I had nothing to work with except the origional alumunun material,on my rebuild, every thing as well as steering was toast. A running motor made it a OK deal and I now have a great boat. As well as my 22 Holiday with big power. Have a great rebuild the cost is reasonable and the results you can be proud of.

LIS, sorry to say but those dents in the side are gonna be with you no matter what you do.

I don't know where you're located but there are some really good deals on CL right now. Keep looking, or buy this one and live with the dents.

As I have been told before, the dents won't make it perform any better. They are only cosmetic. If you can live with it, buy it. You may possibly be able to push them back out a little also, so they aren't so noticeable. It all depends on what you want.

Percentage effect the dents have on performance.....zero

percentage of the time you'll see them when you're aboard and enjoying the boat.....zero

Pugetsound is right, paint the area pure white and you'll only see em from a few angles

if it really bothers you, a body man with a torch and "shrinking hammer" could probably get rid of em easily if you brought him the boat stripped to bare alum.

Re: Nube Help

Yes it is the right colors for me. He is asking $550. I would hope that I can get it into shape for $1500 or less total. I have not done any kind if boat repairs but I have done most automotive repairs. Engines, transfer cases, clutches, HVAC, and almost anything else automotive.

The better half thinks it looks terrible but with some time and energy I think it could come back to life.

what's the engine like? this will be maybe your biggest $ issue. have you run a compression or leakdown test? good news is that it's an easy motor to work on and find parts for.

I did not have a compression tester with me at the time. What is the suggested pressure, 130 psi? With out a battery I was unable to crank it over.

If you have access to motor lift the cover and turn the flywheel. If the compression is reasonable it will turn hard then release as you turn it . That boat looks like a good cleaning and if it runs use it till fall then you will know just what you want to rebuild. Remember if it ain't broke don't fix it. The interior loks servicable as is . Even has a Glove box and a radio of sorts. Also dose the wheel turn the motor??? that, if not working can be a $150-160 fix by its self.

Re: Nube Help

you can always hook up long jumper cables and crank it from your car battery. 130 psi is decent and will run, 140+ is better. but like a car, main issue is consistency between cyl.s. and if boat is a good buy, you can always rebuild/swap out the motor later if needed.

I can get that knocked down to $100 :)

The compression numbers themselves are less important (the gauges are notoriously inaccurate) but that they are all within 10% of each other (as mentioned). That is not an electric shift motor so darn near any part you'd need for it is available.

Re: Nube Help

The wheel did not turn well so I would guess the linkage was seized.

EZ your the reason that I want a SS. Yours and joeyplumley's are the my inspiration.

The guy that has is was going to call me when he found the title but I have not heard back yet. Which is good since I still have to clean out a bit more room in my garage. He has one other guy that wants the engine separated from it so maybe I can get it for next to nothing. Only downfall is that I would have to find another engine down the line.

Re: Nube Help

Im sorry my last post should have said does the steering wheel turn the moter/ Your engine on the boat is like my 50 hp very easy to service and has the manual shift. A new seering wheel CABLE and complete set up would cost $ 150 to 175. did not mean to confuse you ) Note . If the cable is frozen he may have a heck of a time removeing the engine without removeing the cable with it. Or use a saws all to cut it. Thats how I removed the one on my 16SS for the rebuild.

Re: Nube Help

The first boat is a no-go. He lives in Phoenix but the boat is in Minnesota, can't find a title, and he want to do a money transfer into his bank. The second one has another potential buyer that is looking at it tonight. So I have my fingers crossed that he doesn't get it.

On a technical note, can you add tilt/trim to a motor that does not have it? That was on option that I was looking for. It will be for a 1987 60hp Merc.

Typically.....yes. Some more economically than others. Pre-1979 Johnson/Evinrudes are REAL expensive to add it to. You can get a CMC unit but those are, again, real expensive. '79 or newer J/E's you can do it for like $250.
