I don't own a cutting touch, but have an small old piece of farm equipment (cultimulcher) that is completely bolted together. partially dismanteling it, will make it easier to take to the scrap yard.

Even though this thing has sat outside for over 60 years, PB blaster managed to loosen most of the nuts (PB is great stuff), but a few if these carriage bolts have rounded off inside.

There nut breaker tools available, but I have never used one. These are the one's where you crank a threaded rod to squeeze the nut, against a chisel point surface.

Anyone had any luck with one?

I have had very good luck with nut splitters. As long as you have the room needed to get in there and crank it down it should do the trick. I have a set that has 4 different sizes. Comes in very handy at times.

Re: Nut breaker

I live in an area where salt and rust are the standard!!!

Got a propane torch? Heat that nut up with a propane torch and it should give. Since you already used PB on it .... it will stink too!

Or

Go the sawsall route and slice themlike TD said.

Re: Nut breaker

Nut breakers work just fine, but few people know how to use them properly..(21 years Maintenance Machinist..seen it all)
What you need to do is the same technique as flywheel pulling.
Ya tighten, then smack the head of the screw with a good HEAVY solid whack.. Ball peen hammer/sledge. Not a wide go for a home run swing.
And with a heavy Ball peen/sledge..(I got a 5 pounder here, 10 inch handle..does the job fine (put yer safety glasses on too ALWAYS, and NEVER use a "Claw Hammer", made for soft nails, Claw's are hardened steel, can chip out too easy..and you will lose an eyeball..happened to a guy at work. Not the same senario, but close. He put a 2 inch shaft in a 90 ton press to straighten it out. He grabbed the wrong V-Blocks. The hardened ones, not soft. One exploded, and shoved a 2 inch sliver right into his eye. and never saw out of it again. He (Crazy Wally) still rode motorcycles after that, and rode with him. Just stay on his right side...
(Damn NEVER USE A CLAW HAMMER FOR NOTHING BUT SOFT NAILS. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That said, just a good solid whack, then tighten again, and whack again.
Have a set here, bought from Harbor Frieght years ago. "Points" still fine, heads "mushroomed". And they have busted in half every nut I came at with.
Again, WEAR SAFETY GLASSES.
A long time ago, I was working on a rebuild of a 1965 Mustang manual Trans. Needed to whack slam something in somewhere. Had a brass rod at hand, but no hammer. Grabbed an old busted second gear, and gave it a whack. Piece chipped off the gear, and stuck in my cheek very deep, and had no glasses on....but I got good "Angels" I guess.
Thats the safety lesson for today. Good set on glasses are $4..get some.
And wear them if in ANY doubt...hope this helps someone on my rant.

Re: Nut breaker

I have had good success with nut splitters, but except on big stuff I do just as well with a cold chisel.

Re: Nut breaker

The simple answer is.."the Red and Green "wrench"..have big tanks in the shop, 50 foot hose, and the portable small roll out if ya get too far away.
Goggles on, strike the torch...."seya"...(scary with a flame my end..):):D

Re: Nut breaker

Going to the scrap yard angle grinder them off

That is what I was thinking, but sometimes those rascals are in areas that you can't get nothing into.

On some of the really rusted stuff, instead of trying to take them off, I will purposely tighten them down until they twist off. Sometimes it is quicker that way. Of course large bolts are not going to twist off as easy as smaller ones.

Re: Nut breaker

only time i used a nut splitter it broke. I guess i didn't know how to use it. I have since up graded to a red wrench and that has been the ticket. I have cut bolts that probably could have been loosened by hand. it is just too easy.

of course the sawzall and the angle grinder work as well.

Re: Nut breaker

If you're throwing it out just put a 1/2 inch drive socket on it with a breaker bar and over tighten it until it breaks off.

That was going to be my suggestion also. You don't have the grind the nut either. You can grind the head if it is easier.

If you don't have a lot of room to operate...a small Dremel tool would work. I have used them multiple times to cut through bolts.

Re: Nut breaker

If the hads are rounded off but there is room for a wrench of some kind try a small pip wrench to break them free.

Well, I could put you in touch with my second ex-wife, she was an expert nut - breaker

Seriously, twist them off if you can't get a hammer in there.

Anyone had any luck with one?
