I'm selling my boat and trailer to someone local, LI NY. The trailer registration IS transferrable, so does that mean that the license plate just simply becomes there's? Or do I have to surrender the plate, like you do with a regular vehicle? DMV is closed right now, and the guy might pick it up today, so I figured I'd see if anyone happened to know, before hand.

Not to my knowledge. When the registrations expire you don't have to turn them in ( unless that has changed recently ), but they need to get their own plates.

The Registration is Transferable to another Vehicle that YOU own. Not to another person.
You can transfer your Old Plates to your New Trailer and save on the Fees.
No new trailer? Plates become Garage Wall Art.

He will need to get his own plates.
If he drives off with your old plates and gets into an accident,
You will be identified as the registered owner ($$$), or at least until you explain it to the judge.
Don't be THAT Guy!

"Transferrable" means you can transfer the ownership with a bill of sale and no title is required. Sign the back over to him and he will get a new registration. You need to keep the plate.

Some buyers will ask to use your plate to get the trailer back to their place. DON'T give in. The plate can be used on another trailer of yours or garage art, but you can be held liable for damages if they should occour while he 'borrowed' your plate for transport.

Exactly. Your trailer didn't have/require a title so the registration is the title you transfer to the new owner. You keep the plate or transfer the plate to a new trailer you own. As mentioned elsewhere, you keep the plate, do not give it to the new owner of the trailer.

**The trailer under my Bayliner was this way, transferable registration. My Four Winns has a title and the registration is non-transferable.

+1

If you feel the need to be a Really Nice Guy; :D
Tow the boat to his house for him; Remove the Plate, and take it home with you.

Ayuh,.... Exactly,.... the "Transferable" is only 'bout Ownership, not licencin'...

The plate can be used on another trailer by the same owner, or is thrown away,....
No turn in's on wagon plates...

Exactly right for NY.

I've used a seller's plate to get the trailer/boat home. I didn't ask, he offered, and it did save me a lot of miles back & forth. But I'm not that nice a guy, I would never offer the same.

Re: NY transfer trailer plates to new owner?

I had such a problem buying my boat out of state and getting the trailer titled/registered in PA. PA requires you to present the trailer to have the VIN verified. The wording surrounding this was confusing, and it seemed you could have a mechanic, notary, or police officer verify the VIN for you. Well - long story short, the notary has to be an 'agent of the DMV of PA'... so I had two choices - ask very nicely to borrow the plate to get it home (had my own insurance already) - and then fedex the plate back to the prior owner - or wait additional weeks for the back and forth of paperwork by mail - to get a plate for it, only to then drive the 100+ miles to get to the boat. Thankfully the prior owner was gracious enough to allow me to borrow the plate! Keep in mind - you CAN get insurance for a vehicle you are in process of purchasing - before you take posession (as long as you have all identifying factors - VIN, etc.).
