o.b. motor will not turn over with key

1979 evenrude 85 hp ob will not turn over or crank when key is turned on. however the motor can be started by jumping the starter solinoid please give good advise I dont know much about ob motors

mercrude, First of all I don't know what method you used in jumping solenoid.Did you bypass the ignition wire and jump accross large cables or jump from input voltage large cable to ignition wire?Point is , solenoid could be culprit.Test solenoid by jumping from large input cable to ignition wire on solenoid..If good ,motor will crank and you likely have a faulty ignition switch or loose wiring on same.Also, there should be a fuse in your motor compartment that could be blown.Check ground terminals on engine block for good connection.

O.B.<br />I jumped the solinoid by touching one large terminal and one small terminal on the solinoid

mercrude.<br />I have had a similar problem with my rude after I rebuilt it, my culprit was the safety switch which triggers from a cam on the trottle arm (stops the motor being cranked with to much throttle on)

mercrude, The switch RPJS mentions is the nuetral safety switch in throttle controls.Check this out along with ignition switch and wiring in controls.

thanks guys I checked out the neutral safty switch and that was the culprit <br />my other problem is my shift control wont go in reverse only forward
