Re: O/b vs I/b all things equal

I debated over this for a little bit myself. The factor that helped me decide was the exhaust/engine noise. While putting around in an IO you can easily talk and understand each other unlike the older 2-stokes. However, I understand that that the newer OB's are much better now. Between this, willing to do the maintenance myself and the extra swim deck area in the back helped me to decide to go with an IO. Good luck.

PS, I'm with the others and don't think fuel savings should have any place in considering a boat.
PSS, remember there is no replacement for displacement!

There may be a little more noise from a modern 2-stroke but it's insignificant when you consider wind noise, noise from the boat moving through the water, noise from other boats. Sure, at idle, moving slow across the lake, not ideal for quiet fishing. Full throttle accelleration there may be more noise, but its not as bad as you think and certainly not anywhere near what 2-stroke dirt bikes sound like. Heck, I rode a Yahama 2-stroke street back in the late 70's that was no louder than any 4-stroke bike I rode and less vibration than say a Honda 250 Nighthawk 4-stroke.

I've lost track of the conversation a bit. I'll just say i've got two bowriders one an I/O and one an old school, carbed OB. The 2 stroke O/B uses insulting amounts of gas. I mean I had a guy comment the other day at the gas station about how bad it was that I was driving a brand new Yukon and how irresponsible it was to have a truck so big and its awful mileage. I should have said well you should see how much my 2 stroke boat engine uses. Oh plus you have to like smoke and noise with the old school OB's. That said, the I/O annual maintainance and scheduled maintainance is expensive compared to the bullet proof OB.
