i hooked my motor (81, evinrude, 115 hp.) up to a hose with the "muffs" i turned on water no water came out the little pee hole untill after i started motor, becuse were the boat is and were the water is were my boat is kept it was a pain in the butt to get them together espicially when im by myself so i took a 20 gallon plastic barrel put a water spiket on the bottom of it the i put the barrel on the tailgate of my pick up fill with water go back to the boat hook up the hose and muffs this time when the motor starts there is water runing out were the muff is but nothing is comming out the pee hole, would it be a fair assumption that my impeller is impaired?

Uhhh, no, you have an external water pressure issue. You should be fine as long as you get a stream soon after starting, but I'd try to find a way to get significantly more water pressure ... ;)

Impeller won't move water unless it's turning, ie motor running.....

Boat is on a trailer, right? Why not take it to somewhere with a hose?

Wow - 121 word paragraph with no capitalization, no periods, and one heck of a problem telling where one thought ends and another begins. Water runs downhill by gravity. It goes through a hose from a "spigot" under pressure. Either way, you will not see water from the "tell tale" unless the engine is running. And just because the engine is running does not mean the impeller is ok. Whether by gravity or pressure, the pump is being "assisted" by the pressure regardless how much or how little. The water pump on an engine is also NOT a "lift" pump, meaning it cannot suck water from a location lower than the pump itself. It is a "volume" pump and requires that it be under water to operate properly.

i if the powerhead is higher than the spigot at the bottom of the barrel, it aint gunna get any water unless the impeller is working.

you should put the boat in the water from the barrel on your pickup using your pickup to put the boat in the water from the barrell you will probably find the pump on the motor will pump water even though it is a pain in the butt to put the boat in the water using your pickup rather then the barrell with with spiket on the tailgate if you decided to put the boat in the water with your pickup you will probably see water comming out of the pee hole. hope this helps

Lol you guys are great...The deal is i am always working on the boat by myself. I have a cover over the bed of my truck, And I have to get in and out to attach trailer. Its on gravel so it wont roll...I have gatherd that the barrel set-up is "insoffeciant" for various reasons. And "inconclusive". aA far as impellor operation, I will have to fill the barrel with "beer", And use the spigot for "drinking it,..." lol....now you got capitals and periods...thank you all im going fishing!!!! : )

So your saying using a barrel with a spigot is not inhancing the boat to the water transportation:mad: and that using the pick up to bring the water to the boat is a thought i should only ponde:facepalm:r, but what does all this have to do with the pee hole?

The water pump on your boat won't lift water, it has to be submerged to work.

If you haven't changed the impeller in the last 3 years just do it, it needs it.
