I'm replacing the lower unit seals on a 9.5hp johnson, model mq-12a. I got seal kit 18-2682 for the job and I've figured out wher all the o-rings go except for 2 of them. One is for the shift rod pivot pin and one is for the shift rod itself. One o-ring is much fatter than the other. Which one goes where?

Also, the 2 seals which go in the prop bearing and up near the water pump are both the same type in the kit. However, when I pulled out the old seals, the one near the water pump is larger in diameter. Do I use the one in the kit, which is smaller in diameter? Did I order the wrong kit? Everywhere I've looked up the seal kit # points to the 18-2682 kit. Help?

Hi Beeman
The parts manual shows both seal being the same for this model year. Some one may have changed L/Us at some point. Does your drive shaft seal fit directly into the main L/U housing? Or does it fit in a bushing plate sealed by a gasket mounted to the l/u housing? Sometimes in these kits you will get a few extra o-rings and things. This is so they will work for a wider range of models. So you may not need every part.

It mounts into a plate, which then gets mounted into the l/u housing.

Hi Beeman
Thats good. Both seals should be the same. Of course not being able to see what you have I can't say for sure. But all sounds correct.
