Don't know this for a fact, but I think the general rule of thumb is 1/2 the beam times 3.<br /><br />For example my 14 ft john has a beam of a hair over 4 ft. 4 foot by half is 2, times 3 is 6 feet.<br /><br />I think that to go much beyond this dimension makes it hard to row. <br /><br />In my example the oarlock sits about 2 feet (actually a little less, you don't want the handles bumping) from the handle. This leaves about 4 feet outside the boat.
