Re: Oars

Don't know this for a fact, but I think the general rule of thumb is 1/2 the beam times 3.

For example my 14 ft john has a beam of a hair over 4 ft. 4 foot by half is 2, times 3 is 6 feet.

I think that to go much beyond this dimension makes it hard to row.

In my example the oarlock sits about 2 feet (actually a little less, you don't want the handles bumping) from the handle. This leaves about 4 feet outside the boat.

Re: Oars

The Shaw & Tenny Paddles and Oars Catalog, Traditionally Hancrafted since 1858, Has the following formula for selecting length of oars: X=1/2Span plus 2" where Span is distance between oar locks. Oar Length = X/7x25 gives a leverage ratio of 7:18. There web at: www.shawandtenney.com or call 1-800-240-4867 to order a catalog. :)
