obd2 diagnostic scanner, any recommendations?

Thinking about getting one since it is needed for all the cars these days.......saw one called auto-tap that looked pretty nice, it interfaces with a laptop. but i haven't done much research yet...

haven't seen that one yet. at work we have a tech 2,ngs,tech 1 and a matco. i think my boss will be getting us a laptop and programs in the next year or so so we can do the "CAN" stuff thats coming down. you can get an obd2 code reader for less than 200 bucks but that about all they will do is read the code.

Hello, Try eBay. Lot's of Snap On scanners sold there that will scan OBD II ECM's.

I picked up at OBDII from harbor freight for 40 bucks that will read the codes. Other auto shops like Napa etc. will also have them. They will give you the codes but it is a shotgun approach if you have no manual to rely on. If you like to play and have the time and facilities go for it. It is fun and at the most you learn something.

Yep, I am beginning to realize that just reading the codes won't do it. that't why this autotap system seemed attractive... it has software that loads on a windows machine and helps transulate the codes into something meaningful. thanks for the input folks. :D
