I'm having a hard time identifying my outboard by it's serial number. The number is 2245705, it's a Mercury, long shaft 4.5 hp. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Phil.

Hi there, welcome to iboats!

How sure are you the first number of the serial number starts with a 2? is the number easily readable or hard to make out?

Though not listed in any online charts that I know of/saw, any serial number within your 4.5 HP range that starts with a 2 is in the 1967ish year range so my guess would be within that timeframe if it really starts with a 2.

Here's just an example to base the 67 year range off of,

The single cylinder 4.5 was marketed from 75 to 85----Post some pictures with cowling on and off.

Don't seem to be able to upload pictures, and opening a photobucket account (so I could post a link to pictures) didn't go well either. the serial plate is pretty clear, is there somewhere else I could find identification, other than on the swivel mount? Thanks.

Ok, I've had the chance to snap a few more pics. One is of a number on the side of the engine, between a hose, and what I'd expect is a valve cover (please pardon my ignorance of 2-stroke workings). The other picture is of a number on the head, just beneath the spark plug.

Nah, still couldn't post pictures. The number on the side is 843-2755. The one on the head is 1016-2751.

Well, the decal on the cowling was used in 76 and 77 model years.-----Perhaps your motor is a 67 made to look a little newer than it is.-----Your location ?

I am about 2 hrs away from the Blue Mountain area, used to ski there years ago.------There is no exteral ignition coil showing on it , so that would likely confirm a 67 model 3.9 hp.

Ok, I'll cross-reference a few part numbers with that info, and see if I can't get a match. It didn't cross my mind that the cowl or badge might be wrong.

Yep, someone swapped a later cowling onto your motor. Lots of folks think the recoils contain some kind of juju, so when one breaks, they feel it's easier to just replace the cowling rather than try to fix the recoil. Also possible it just took a tumble out of a pickup bed and busted the old cowling/housing up and someone replaced it with whatever fit. The motor's fifty years old - could probably tell lots of stories....
