obsolete coil

I have a 1984 (I think) 8hp Mariner outboard that I am working on for an 80 yr old neighbor. Anyway apparently this thing is a bastard engine. Yamaha built it and put points in it. The only Yamaha that had points was a 2hp. It has a bad wire and it does not replace like my beloved jonrudes. It has cm61-26 stamped on it. I found one on ebay and thought I was in business. Well it has 1.5 ohms less resistance and has CDI stamped on it. Apparently for capacitive discharge ignition. I have searched the internet over and found no coil. Can I convert this thing over to cdi if I can find a yamaha 8hp that has it? is there a conversion available that would work with the cdi coil. It is identical in every respect except the resistance. It has no low rpm spark and a weak high rpm. Swapped with the other and problem moves with it.

Re: obsolete coil

You have a B model and coils are still available as 94777M upper coil and 94778M lower coil...

Thank you so much for your timely reply. I have no idea why I could not find this but I guess just googling for mariner and yamaha is insuffecient. Now I just have to talk an 80 year old man into an $80.00 coil. He will never understand. He really could use the lower also because while the wire is not bad yet, it will be soon. Thanks again.

Re: obsolete coil

Seems like a well designed motor, just wish parts were easier to find for it. The bastard remark refers to only using the point setup on the mariner and not yamaha. And parts being difficult to find. This motor has great compression though so it will run great when I iron out the secondary ignition!
