Hello all,
I'm new here, so thank you in advance to those of you who freely share your expertise.
I have a 1988 OMC 4.3l with an OMC cobra leg-in a 16-1/2' Campion. The engine runs well and the leg seems to perform well, but we've noticed an issue lately.
I tow skiers. I put it into gear at idle and it makes a normal clunk as the gears engage. Then as I hit it for the hole shot, there is sometimes a second CLUNK, in about the first 1 or 2 seconds. It is louder and more violent than the initial noise as it goes into gear. Other than the clunk there is no slippage or anything and it runs and pulls very strongly.
Any ideas if this is a common thing or known issue?
Other information:
It only ever does it under load. If no skier behind it won't do it.
It does it on maybe 50% of my hole shots.
The engine and leg run very well at all other times and conditions.
The shift linkage is a little funny. One has to kind of wiggle it to get it in neutral, and sometimes it takes a second or third try. I don't know if this is related to the issue or not.
It seems if I put it in gear, and then wait for a few seconds before the hole shot, it doesn't do it as often.
