ocean runner motor

I'm interested in purchasing a 115 oceanrunner motor around 98 ish and using it for a fish and ski boat(87 bayliner 1804) and was wondering how they are . I've been told there not that good .Is there any truth to this .I was told to stick with some thing around 95 . some insite would be appreciated.

I think that motor is superior to a lot of other OBs. I have the '98 150HP V6 version, and it is super. Since the 115HP V4 is the same design, I expect it to be super as well.

really, I can go up to a 150 hp but being the boat is a 87 and not sure of the strength of the transom and the 115 were more available I started looking at them. Right now I have a 125 force and was looking for something different and newer.

I would be curious of the weight of the 125 Force...probably about the same as the 150/175 V-6 which are around 375 lbs. the OMC 85-115s are around 330 lbs. I have a 1996 150 V-6. Good motor. But I have nothing at all against Yammys or Mercs...even the Suzukis seem to do well. I would not go back with a force though.

I think it weighs about 300lbs .Might I see an increase in speed if I go to a johnson? As I said I can go up to 150 but will that make much of a difference from a 115 ? With my force I'm doing about 35 mph

you should see 40-45 with a 150...if you can find a 175 it is the same weight and should do about 50

I have a 1997 ocean pro 90 and a 1995 Ocean Runner 115. they are the same motor design!!!


it is the same block design all the way to 1999 maybe higher for the johnson..

I know Evinrude started to push the fitch in the late 90's.

my 95 115 is supposed to weigh 316 lbs.... it is a 20" shaft, maybe the 25" shaft motors went into the 320's
I have only run my motor for the late summer till now( i use it for waterfowl hunting in the Hudson river and the new england coast). it has been great...

it supposedly is the better of the offerings from johnson-evinrude as far as gas usage goes...in those HP's and years

I will say one draw back to that motor for YOU, MIGHT be the Prop SELECTION

it is a small gearcase and as such it is hard to find a lot of options for props.

it seems that the motor would accept a 16" prop, but it is impossible to find on that fits that is larger than 14"...

if you went up to the 150, you would have all the choices of the larger gearcase props.

Do they smoke very much? I know my force does quite a bit and with kids in the boat I like to have miminal as possible.

I have been adding a little extra oil for the winter use.... but i only notice the smoke when i first start the morning at the ramp....

i would think all motors would smoke based on the oil ratio.... dont know how one could produce more smoke than another because of the engine..

unless the fuel/oil pump wasnt working right...which is the same thing as changing the oil ratio.

What 90's johnson motor should I look for then my 87 bayliner fish and ski weight is about 1500lbs 18 1/2 ft and max hp allowed is 150. I only plan on fishing and taking kids out on lakes and rivers.

I dont think johnson made a 4 stroke in the 90's....

I think you are in the right area..the eagle motors( 60 degree loopers) are nice motors.

90-115 are almost the same...same weight.

I think they made crossover 90 degree motors in 88, 90, 112, and 115 hp...but the are worse on gas.



anything larger is probably a V6 and weighs more...I dont know anything about them...

just look around for the best motor you can find and hope you get some kind of warranty... condition of a specific motor is more important than the year and model
