Forgive me if this as been mentioned, but why not buy some longer lugs? They are easily pounded out the back and new ones installed. I had an issue very similar to yours and that solved it for me. That's the cheapest....

the old hubs were potmetal and were about 3/4" too short. when i placed the new hubs on the spindle the nut would not go on. :(

Oh, the castle nut wouldn't go on?...weird! You could just get longer spindles welded on. That's what I ended up doing as well (long story) The spindles are 30.00 each and say 100.00 to weld on. Spindles are easy to put on, you just need to make sure they're straight! Might reconsider that as an option possibly.

yes i did think about the spindle replacement.... its just a ol trailer and if it was maybe a little more modern then yes i would have replaced the spindles. but then again for the same money a new axle would maybe better?
well wish me luck. we are about to embark on a journey. 100 miles on the freeway, then another 75 miles of mountain twisties. we shall see how the repairs hold up.

It sounds to me like the OP did the right thing here, a new off the shelf axle wouldn't do him much good on that trailer, the axle on that has a knuckle joint attachment lug at each end. Many of those were either welded on or part of an end casting or forging that includes the spindle.
Chances of removing any of that for reuse is slim. You would have to fabricate a complete new assembly to fit that suspension. No doubt the cost or plain hassle of doing that would far surpass just buying a newer trailer.
In most cases, those older trailers are best suited as show pieces under vintage restorations. A modern trailer is much easier to launch and load from as well.
Personally, I prefer my trailers to be as low as possible, the lower the boat sits on the trailer, the shallower I can launch. With some of the ill designed ramps I see being built these days, every inch counts. On some of those older trailers you can back all the way down the ramp and the boat will still not get wet. I had an old Gator trailer that sat too high until I modified it.

rf,
i agree a newer trailer runs a little shallower. it is what i had to work with, the good news is the trailer did pretty well. i drove about 400 miles round trip, half of those miles were through the mountains.
