Hi,

I have a Mercruiser 225/Ford 302 (well, it was actually replaced by a Ford 351W two years ago, but thats not the point here). It is coupled to a VP 280 sterndrive by a bellhouse (is that the correct term?) wich does not look like most other, cone shaped bellhouses - this is more like a "tunnel", 11 cm or about 4-5 inches long.

The problem is that I have detected an unwanted noise from this part, might be a supporting bearing or something. But no mechanic here in Sweden that I have been in contact with can figure out the make or the manufacturer of this part (I guess they are too young for these 70ties parts...).

I want to know a bit more before starting pulling things apart. Btw, I know that the VP AQ240 was Ford based a couple of years in the mid 70ties, what did they use for adapters to connect with the VP280?

Any suggestions are welcome!

I would first pull off the upper unit and check the universals. The noise from a bad universal will transmit into that bearing assy. I have a 280 and it had a noise when I first got it. Replaced the universals and it took care of the noise. That is what I would check first, then that bearing assy. Good Luck and welcome aboard iboats............SS

Got to thinking, where the shaft from that bearing assembly slides into the fliywheel is like a clutch plate with springs (coupler) It is very possible your noise can be coming from it as well. I had one that had some cracks in it and replaced it also.

Sounds like you have the 2 pc bellhousing like this. Item 60 has the shaft and 2 bearings in it.

It then bolts to the engines flywheel cover (#14 in the picture below.

Don is probably right.# 62 has #66 +67 bearings in them. #70 is a screw that in a lot of cases has been replaced with a grease fitting.Yours probably didn't get grease or replaced.
The Bellhousings are a Volvo product The one Don showed you is older. The newer ones have the same setup with a driveshaft with 2 bearings and seals to keep the grease in.4 cylinder motors only have 1 bearing.
The bad part is you have to pull the motor to get to these parts. If you have trouble getting these parts there is a guy in Pasadena Md. That might have them.Cobe Marine. Good luck ,Jerry

Hi Don,

thanks for your help (and nice pic).

But its not the right one since the piece in your drawing is "curved" (or bell shaped) as well - mine has like a straight, cylinder shaped housing with flanges in the ends.

Although its doing the same job as the one on your drawing, I still would like to know its origin & specifications.

Regards
