i posted a little while ago about some problems i was having with my 1971 merc 4 hp, 1 cyl... unable to start, seems maybe weak spark.

it turns out it the isolator was cracked, i just electrical taped it up until a new one comes in l. now that i got that fixed i am now stumped on something else, that i hope i didn't cause.

anyways....

now when i go to start it up, it fires and sputters and then sound like it just whirrs/spins for a second or 2. when i take off the flywheel, the key is broken. i have now gone through 3 keys (the (| looking thing, for the flywheel to shaft)

i have no idea what i should be looking for in order to fix this. any help?

Re: odd new problem

what direction should the flywheel be spinning when pulling the starter cord?

could it be that i wound it incorrectly and now when i pull start it, it has to reverse direction, therefore breaking the key and stopping?

edit

well i don't think that's it, because the pawls engage properly.

I'm really stumped
