Odd Question (Really no idea on this one)

So yesterday I bought a boat (3rd Post so far today I started like this) and when I got home and was playing around I noticed a clay brick under the engine in the back of the boat. It wasn't supporting anything and just layed under there loose so I picked it up and pulled it right out like nothing. Now looking back I was wondering if anyone has heard about any reason to have something like this under the engine even though the engine is supported fine and don't even touch the brick in any way. Maybe it is something simple like they stored it down in there to use as a tire stop when away from home or something but I wanted to make sure it wasn't for anything like support when the engine starts vibrating or something. (This make any sense)

The boat is a 1984 19' Bayliner with a Volvo Penta I/O engine.

As a note I still have the brick and could easily put it back

Ask the person you bought it from.

When you say clay, do you mean a red brick you would find on the exterior of a building? Or do you mean a flexible, moldable clay like material?

My first guess if it's flexible, and clay like, would be a bilge absorber. Put there to collect oils from the bilge, so as to not dump overboard.

If its a red, or other colored, hard, clay brick... um... no idea.

No its the red, hard, exterior of your house or maybe a small outdoor wall brick

OH MY GOD YOU TOOK IT OUT!!! Just kidding....I'm sure there is no necessary reason for it.....maybe the PO used it to prop something up while doing maintenance like changing the oil or something....if you find yourself working under there and say to yourself..."man I could really use something like a brick here to make things easier" put it back.

Probably there for some obscure reason that we'll never know. I keep blocks of wood for prop removal, to put behind wheels to keep them from rolling, to beat catfish to death so they don't stick me with their barbs. Some folks might use a brick or concrete block as an anchor. You've got a real mystery there! Good Luck!

It's for when jet-skiers get too close to you while you're fishing.

Last year I had to have a small 2x2 in the back of my boat. I used it to prop my engine up to pull out of my driveway.

That's what I guess it was for...

PO's wife probabally put it back there so he would go nuts wondering what the clunk was every time he took off.

With all these reasons and uses for the brick maybe I should consider filling my engine compartment with them. Seems like I could never have enough.

a little off topic.

Does anyone remember the "Golden Goat"
Maybe it was just a local thing.
It was an aluminum can recylcing machine. We used to save the cans for winter. Filled the can about 1/4 with water and let them freeze. Take them to the golden goat. used to get extra money for "heavy aluminum" :)

I keep a brick in my boat also. When my wife starts running her mouth telling me how to drive the boat I say, " I swear if you dont shut up, Im gonna hit you with a brick".
It works because she knows I have a brick handy.
