Perfidiajoe has it nailed.
You don't understand how guages work. The ONLY way for your method to work would be a square, level tank. Your guage measures (by float) the LEVEL. It does NOT measure capacity. With a rounded, odd shaped tank, such as a motorcycle, the top half won't get you as far as the bottom half. But at half full, your still half full. You would do better to use an hour meter as a guage. After a while running you can determine just about how much you use per hour. Just like you would do in a car if your guage quit, you could use the trip meter to determine miles traveled, divided by your miles per gallon, when to buy more gas.

Wrong... 2005 Searay 180 Sport, the fuel guage reads 1/2 full when the fuel tank is way more than half full. The
Lets not confuse this issue.

And as an after thought, ticking off the dealer over something trivial like this, will put you in the back of the pack of courteous customers come time you have real trouble. IMHO. Good luck.

The capacitance type sensor pointed out by jtexas is just a very sophisticated dipstick or sightglass type device, meaning the probe still only measures fuel level in the tank and a programmed interface is required to translate each measured increment of height into an indication of gallons. See the patent for a description of this type of sensor. Sounds expensive. Let's hope the Moeller calibrated sensor works for RebelRipper. The Moeller website doesn't give any info on their calibrated sensor. As a last resort, since he can see the level of fuel in his translucent tank, RebelRipper could always draw lines and write the corresponding gallons on the side of the tank. That'd be low-tech, foolproof, and cheap.

Doesn't a capacitive sender measure the level of liquid on a conductor inside a tube...so if the tube is curved where more of it is in the bottom half of the tank than the top...well, it's just a theory. Let us know how it goes. ;)
